By Lee Groves - When Yuri Foreman defends his WBA junior middleweight title against Miguel Cotto at the new Yankee Stadium on June 5, the venue will receive as much billing as the fighters.

That’s because the age of New York City ballpark fights ended after Muhammad Ali retained his world heavyweight championship by decisioning top contender Ken Norton more than three decades ago.

The evening of September 28, 1976 was one of confrontation, chaos and controversy. Inside the ropes, Ali and Norton waged war for the third and final time while outside the stadium striking NYPD officers used the fight as a platform for their pay demands as well as to show how an absence of their crowd control skills would impact a marquee event. was a nice read

as for the scoring of the third fight, maybe Norton didn't get credit for his work to the body

he hurt Ali bad to the body in the second fight too

Good read, IMO Norton won the 3rd fight, I had it scored 8-6-1 in his favour.

Beautiful read. My prospective on Ken Norton is he's the most underrated heavyweight EVER. I watched these fights and they were all nail biters. Especially this one, I couldn't complain if they scored it either way. It was a classic IMO. I think Ali barely squeezed on by.

It makes one wonder how much better the fights could have been between them were they both, say, 26-27 instead of 33-34.

Norton just had a style that was all wrong for the post-1970 version of Ali. But overall, Norton was not a great fighter. He lost against almost all the other elite fighters he faced. He was a very good fighter, but not a great one.

Just like Jimmy Young's style was all wrong for Foreman, but Jimmy Young was not a great fighter.

              Styles make fights.
