Comments Thread For: Amir Khan's Victory Continues Longtime U.K. Tradition

By Lee Groves - Saturday night’s WBA junior welterweight title fight between champion Amir Khan and challenger Paul Malignaggi was only the latest chapter in a long and storied tradition among fighters based in the United Kingdom – earnest efforts to make a mark in America.

Although fighters from the UK (and Europe for that matter) have gained power and preeminence in recent years, creating a positive reputation in the U.S. remains a high priority because they believe that if they can make it in America they can make it anywhere. [Click Here To Read More]

I wanted to include Nigel in the piece but after losing to Watson he had three consecutive fights in the U.S. as a main-eventer before winning the WBO middleweight title from Doug DeWitt. A few of Nigel's fights are in the new book, by the way. :-)

Oh god, he beat Malignaggi, and now everyone thinks he's an A+ fighter. What a joke, talk about a hype job. He's still a journyman. When he beats some real champions then I'll believe the hype, untill then he's just that, HYPE.

It was a great performance by Khan, but its important to remember that Malignaggi aint no prime Don Curry.

The A-plus grade was not based on the level of opponent he defeated, it was based on achieving his goals in terms of strategy and in dealing with fighting away from home. Not many fighters can out-speed and out-box Malignaggi but Khan did both in shutout fashion. You couldn't have asked for much more from a U.S. debut, thus the high grade.

Yes, Malignaggi is not Donald Curry or Bernard Hopkins or even Kevin Kelley, but he a world-class fighter who got everything he could out of his skill set. For a guy who did not have the safety net of one-punch power, he got pretty far in this game.
