Comments Thread For: Edwin Valero: A Life of Success, Excess, Self-Destruction

By Lee Groves - On the night of February 6, 2010, Edwin Valero was at the top of his game.

In stopping Antonio DeMarco via nine-round corner retirement, Valero proved he was much more than a knockout artist. Fighting through a horrific gash on his forehead, Valero exhibited breathtaking speed, blazing combinations and prodigious volume to register his 27th knockout in as many fights.

Everyone knew Valero could punch, but now they realized that inside the ring he had that vital blend of physical talent and psychological fortitude that would allow him to conquer just about any situation. It would have been convenient for him to submit to the adversity and allow DeMarco’s outside game to pick him apart. [Click Here To Read More]

how did his alcohol and drug abuse go unnoticed in the boxing arena? Once you are addicted, staying clean even for the time needed for it to be removed from your system is impossible before you go into the withdrawal symptoms.

Thats what i was thinkin, dont they test for that kind of 'ittt?

      I guess not.

Maybe he was experiencing withdrawals and thats what fuelled his rage in the ring, he knew the sooner he could finish his opponent of the sooner he could get back on it.

only real withdrawals are from opiates and booze. to get booze wd's you need to be drinking every day for years. doubt this was the case. i put valero as a ******* abuser which has no physical wd's. mental only. every drug besides benzo's/opiates have no physical wd's. only mental.

I dont think it went unotice, i think they used the dont ask dont tell policy. Also i think that everyone was scared of Valero and what he could of done to them(and they were right to worry after these last couple of days). I mean Valero continusely beat his wife and even mother and sister and they always told cops that the injury was from something else, and Valero still continued to abuse them. Now imagine if they told the truth that Valero did abuse them, he may have killed them all

Sad Sad story. He would have beat the hell out of boring pacman and knocked him into retirement. Was hoping for so many great fights with him and this happens. Terrible tragedy.

Does anyone else think that maybe the brain damage he had from the accident was more serious then they played out to be. It might be what caused him to loose it. Brain damage effects everyone in different ways. I have no hard feelings it's just an unfortunate situation and a sad story. The guy really could have been great but I guess he had some serious problems. I struggled for years with drug use and sometimes it ****ed with my mind and made me think crazy. When your going hard you end up in crazy situations. Dementia is a problem people. You American's will diagnose people with just about everything from ADHD to Restless leg syndrom but you can't recognize when someone has mental problems? Mental problems along with OCD and drug use is not a good combo. You people need to realize this.
