They waited 17-years to make a rematch, and it wasn't pretty. Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones Jr. fought a lackluster twelve round fight on Saturday night in Las Vegas. Hopkins won lopsided decision over Jones, who only threw 274 punches and landed only 82 total punches in the entire fight. Hopkins threw a total of 526 and only landed 184. The detailed round by round figures are a clear indication of how little action there was in the contest. [Click Here To Read More]

The numbers show that Hopkins won the fight, and he did clearly. However he didn't beat up Jones Jr, he simply outworked him. I don't recall Roy ever being in trouble or ever really being on the end of a really hard shot. Roy was potshotting, looking for a knockout (a bizarre tactic against a guy who has never been knocked out) and did land some hard blows as well as some nice uppercuts on the inside. But he never threw enough shots to win more than 1 or 2 rounds where Hopkins was resting.
At the end of the fight, it was Hopkins who had a reddened, swollen face and was visibly distraught. Jones Jr only had bad cuts from butts and was otherwise relatively unblemished. So that tells me that although Roy was outworked, he landed the more effective blows. It was a shame he didn't throw more because he looked to have a lot left in the tank at the final bell. Sadly Roy has proven one thing in his later career - he is not a tactician. He has no strategy other than to fall back on his physical gifts, so now they have waned he is unable to come up with a way to win that doesn't involve being so physically superior to his opponent that all other factors become insignificant.Comment
