Comments Thread For: Chagaev vs Meehan WBA Eliminator on For May 22

May 22nd 2010 will be the moment of truth for Ruslan Chagaev (25-1-1, 17 KOs). The former heavyweight world champion (2007-2009) will return to fighting action at the Hanseatic city of Rostock. At the StadtHalle Rostock Universum Box-Promotion will stage the official WBA eliminator at the heavyweight division. Chagaev's opponent will be the tough Australian Kali Meehan (35-3, 29 KOs). The winner of this highly anticipated fight willl be named the mandatory challenger for reigning WBA champion David Haye assuming that he will win his upcoming fight against John Ruiz. Alexander Dimitrenko said in an interview a couple of days ago that he will have a warm-up fight on this card, then fight the winner of Harrison-Sprott later in the summer.

Too bad Universum keeps young heavyweights so inactive though - it doesn't help them to improve. Dimitrenko hasn't fought since early July of last year.

Denis Boytsov isn't scheduled and hasn't had a meaningful fight yet this year (he fought the tomato can Montiy in Jan).

IMO either one would beat Meehan, who is 40 and has had one meaningful fight in 5 1/2 years but is still getting this "WBA eliminator"

Here are the three "Zauerland option"-fights for Haye before he faces any Klitschko: Ruiz, Valuev, Chagaev/Meehan (Chagaev probably)...

Wait, he has a crushing defeat against one of the Klitschkos, not against any other heavyweights. Who of the recent WBA champions ever fought Klitschkos? Only Chagaev. And who of recent WBA cahmpions fought Chagaev? Both, Valuev and Ruiz, and they both lost to him.

              Very true, unfortunately.

Unfortunately, also very true... Boytsov, Solis - I wonder why these guys are so high-rated. Yes, they are impressive in the ring, but against whom?

I like mandatories Imho, the Klitschko fights are much better if they don't pick up the opponents themselves but get a mandatory defence.

Earlier in his career Chagaev looked like a beast, but his skills started to degrade due to inactivity and injuries.
