Comments Thread For: Twenty Years Later: Chavez-Taylor I Remembered

By Lee Groves - Twenty years ago today, Julio Cesar Chavez and Meldrick Taylor cemented their place in boxing lore by producing a spectacle for the ages. The fight itself had everything a boxing fan could ever want – action, skill, courage and drama – but its destiny proved to be even more than anyone could have imagined.

Referee Richard Steele’s intervention at 2:58 of the final round will forever be a source of controversy and debate, not just 20 years after the fact but for as long as the earth continues spinning on its axis.

One side believes Steele was correct because a distracted Taylor failed to react properly to Steele’s direct questions while others say that the referee should have granted Taylor the benefit of the doubt because of the short time remaining and his previous dominance. [Click Here To Read More]

Taylor got jerked in that fight. Chavez showed off his big Mexican balls by coming back & knocking his ass 2 the floor but the way Richard Steele stopped that fight was horrible. There was 2 seconds left in the fight & he ended up saving Chavez from taking an L.

I’m going to be perfectly honest; to this day I still have mixed feelings about this fight. Talk about a mind screw….

I was still a youngin' when that fight happened....I remember the old heads going crazy in the house when Mel was in charge.....but as Chavez chopped and chopped, I remember this quietness that you rarely hear on fight night in Philly when a Philly fighter is fighting.....it was crazy ....I remember going to my bed and just balling out crying after the stoppage......I had no idea who Chavez was before that night, and I never forgot him afterwards......Chavez was the boogie man to me after that

If he was allowed to continue, the bell would've rang before they engaged each other. He had to be way ahead in the cards and the fact that Chavez was a Don King fighter made it even mor su****ious.
