    Comments Thread For: Zsolt Erdei Officially Vacates the WBC Cruiserweight Belt

    BoxingScene.com was advised that Zsolt Erdei has officially vacated the WBC cruiserweight title. Universum informed the WBC of Erdei's decision on Friday via letter. Erdei gave up his WBO light heavyweight title last November to challenge Giacobbe Fragomeni for the cruiserweight title. He won a majority decision but only weighed 178-pounds for the fight, which is barely above the light heavyweight limit.

    Erdei should fight Chad Dawson. I hear Pascal is out till the summer so that would be a good interim fight in between. See what Erdei has really got.

      Is Zsolt Erdei the Lineal/Real Light Heavyweight Champ?

      Zsolt Erdei defeated Julio Cesar Gonzalez who defeated Dariusz Michalczewski who defeated Virgil Hill. Does this make him the real light heavyweight champion? He beat the man that beat the man. When Michael Spinks vacated the real/lineal title was left vacant and wasn't filled until Virgil Hill became the unified champion by defeating the German champion Henry Maske in 1996. These two were widely recognized as #1 & #2 Light Heavyweights at the time. Found this on arcaneknowledge.org:
      Hill was dethroned by Poland’s Dariusz Michalczewski in 1997. Michalczewski was wrongfully stripped of all but his WBO title shortly after defeating Hill. Meanwhile, Roy Jones, Jr. convincingly defeated top-flight competition to win all three major titles. Both Jones and Michalczewski are to blame for failing to make a bout between them occur. Insisting that Michalczewski’s “lineal” claim makes him the true champion defies reality, as does the notion that Roy Jones, Jr. was never champion, despite holding as many as six titles and being considered one of the pound-for-pound all-time greats. Based on his skill level and accomplishments demonstrated in the ring, often against top opponents who fought Michalczewski more successfully, Jones demonstrated his superiority as best he could without actually fighting Dariusz. Jones was universally recognized as the undisputed champion, not only in his home country but in most of the world, not only on the basis of media coverage, but on the basis of his demonstrated skill level and accomplishments. His final unification bout with Reggie Johnson in 1999 solidified his claim, and put the burden on Dariusz to seek out a fight with Roy Jones rather than the other way around. This was the same year that Ring Magazine recognized Jones as their champion.
      After Glengoffe Johnson defeated Antonio Tarver for the undisputed light heavyweight championship of the world in a split decision, the sanctioning bodies stripped Johnson for granting Tarver a deserved rematch. Unlike other stripped champions, Johnson insisted he was the real champion even without a belt, having the backing of a newly legitimized Ring Magazine, so it may now be possible for a champion to retain public acclaim even without the recognition of a major sanctioning body. It remains to be seen how this experiment will continue, but Tarver, having won the rematch, is unquestionably considered the top light heavyweight for now, while the lineal champion enthusiasts must embrace Zsolt Erdei out of mechanical necessity rather than recognition of real championship qualities.
      Pretty good argument either way.

        Zsolt Erdei has no balls, he should've unified or at least fight a decent challenger when he was at LHW. He has talent, no doubt about that, but he took the WBO title for hostage for years without fighting a worthy opponent, he was a paper lineal champ. Now he should fight Dawson, Pascal, Cloud or retire.

          I'm not at all surprised. An opportunity to fight a quality opponent is a bit too much for Zsolt. Look at what that bastard did to the LHW

            So Zolt finally fights a top ten ranked guy and wins a belt at cruiserweight. His vacant WBA Light Heavyweight belt will be faught for in the coming week or two on Fox Sports. He's asking for a WBC ranking. I guess what I'm getting at is does that mean he will be elgible in the coming year to fight Dawson? I'd like to see it but I know we won't.

              lol; he should have fought cunningham or huck at cruiserweight but just defeated a good puncher but no-skills Fragomeni;

              he keeps running from good challenges - don't like him at all.

                hey if he only weighed 178 for his CW fight, maybe he thinks he can make weight and get into the Super Six. jk, I doubt it.

                  I'd sooner see Wlodarsczyk-Hide than Wlod-Fragomeni again...

                    Tavaris Cloud wants and needs good fights at 175. At the moment he's stuck waiting for Mack and Johnson to fight and determine who his mandatory is. At this rate he'd been on the sidelines until the latter part of the year. I hope his promoters and managers get off their asses and actually get this man some fights and publicity. A fight with Erdei may not be a big name fight like Dawson would be but at least he can say he beat the lineal champ at 175 and Erdei is an undefeated former champ.
