  • “Fighting Words” – Cotto-Pacquiao: The Mercenary and the Mercy Rule

by David P. Greisman - Manny Pacquiao, basking in admiration, savoring the moment, pulled himself up on the ropes. The slow-motion camera captured him, two raised fists, a bare-chested hero looking out, the clarity of the camera shot presenting a 147-pound man as the larger-than-life figure he’d become.

Behind him and below, Miguel Cotto peered through distorted features: swelling above his right eye, bruising below, a cut over his left eye. His mouth remained agape as someone dabbed at the blood, wiped off the sweat. Someone else grabbed his right arm, and his puffed lips pursed shut. “I’m fine,” he said, an insistence, an answer to a question normally reserved for his opponents.

Pacquiao, a mercenary unmatched, had disposed of yet another who stood against him. With that: his 50th win, his 10th current or former titlist vanquished, his seventh world title captured, his third “Fighter of the Year” award cemented.

Cotto had been saved by mercy, the referee stepping in 55 seconds into the 12th round, stopping the bout after the 336th punch to hit him, the 276th power punch landing solidly but being no worse, no more damaging than many that preceded it. The technical knockout as much saved him from further punishment as it did acknowledge that the fight, in reality, had long been over.

Cotto’s father had asked his son’s trainer to stop the bout before the 12th round even began. Cotto’s wife and son had left the arena after the 9th round ended.

Pacquiao, neck-and-neck with Cotto at the beginning, took the lead early and, as he has done again and again, used his speed to pull away. [details]

It is not clear what "Cotto Habits" did Freddie exploited in the fight. I just saw an invincible Manny Pacquiao worthy of all praise he gets.

Really? You saw no flaws in Cotto and no habits that Pac used to beat him? You saw an invincible Pac? Ok then.

Anyway, as always Mr David, good stuff and a brilliant article.

Cotto was doing rather well early, if a little bit reckless. It cost him in the 4th round, but he needed to pursue the same strategy of keeping Pac on the ropes. It's just like trying to beat Peyton Manning. Keep him on the sidelines so he can't throw very often.

Cotto completely abandoned his strategy after getting caught in the 4th, and you can't win a dancing, speed game with Pacquiao.

IMO Cotto was doing well up untill he got reckless in there,i don't no why..it looked like he maybe got alil over confident thus the knockdown in the fourth.Cotto was not the same after that knockdown.
You cannot get reckless with Pac,you must stay tight and focussed.Thats something i see Floyd jr doing. After all,he does it in every fight he's ever had.

                  Miguel Cotto is no more

The real Miguel Cotto died June 2008 when Margarito did what he did to him.
Not taking anything away from PAC, cuz he did what he had to do & did it very well even merciful at moments.
But the cotto that fought vs manny was not the same man that fought b4 the Margo beating. It's sad how Margarito ruined his career, wud get hit, get hurt, KD, & come right back & come strong, but like we saw in the clottey & PAC fight now he gets hit & runs, he's lost his heart & hunger.
Teddy Atlas was right, cotto is dmged goods, he's shot from the Margarito fight. Cotto has moments in fights where he looks like he's back, but than losses his steam & slows down & trows weak punches, his face has gotten destroyed in every fight after the Margo fight also.
Antonio Margarito destroyed a mans career just cuz he wanted to win a fight...
                  That's very sad.
Congratz to Manny Pacquiao, may god bless him & protect him from people like Margarito.

That fight was good for 4 rounds. After that it was a disgrace by Cotto running all night.
