you'd think there'd be greater reverence for the jab and footwork since they're all Ali super fans

Few, if any, fighters today have a magnificent piston jab like Larry Holmes. Just constant bap, bap, bap out there. Wladimir and Lewis had great ramrod jabs, but they'd paw a lot as well. Mainly today I see jabs being used as either pawing rangefinders or countering an opponent with a handspeed deficit. Not as exciting.

And yet... There are many professional boxers without a jab! How can that be? The best of times, the worst of times..

Footwork is one I struggle with during a fight. I tend to focus above the waist as a fan who has never boxed himself. I have tried really hard to learn about footwork and positioning. A slick fighter controlling angles and positioning by how he moves his feet is freaking impressive.

Most of the fighters I've seen in contemporary boxing use the jab as a measuring stick to find distance. Very few fighters actually use the jab as a battering ram to break through their opposition's defense.

there’s a reason why the pros say Larry had the best jab ever

That Stick wouldn’t be so special if everyone could jab like Larry

              it happens

I can see the effects of cutting the ring off but still dont understand exactly how it’s done
