  • Culling The Herd: One Man’s Picks For IBHOF 2010

By Lyle Fitzsimmons - Trust me, I’ve had worse debut performances.

A few come to mind right away. But that’s… ahem, another story.

In this context a year ago, all three of the modern-era fighters eventually deemed worthy of induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame – Lennox Lewis, Orlando Canizales and Brian Mitchell – had check marks next to their names as “Yes” votes on my inaugural Boxing Writers Association of America ballot.

Not bad for a first-time voter, if you ask me.

Still, the task gets no easier this time around.

No fewer than 45 boxers active for at least one fight since 1943 are again on the ballot for 2010 recognition, with voting done through Oct. 31 by BWAA members and select non-members chosen by the Hall’s board of directors.

Each “modern” voter chooses from one to 10 boxers, with the top three vote-getters punching a ticket. The IBHOF board chooses hall-worthy observers, non-participants, pioneers and old-timers.

Other inductees last year included promoter/matchmaker/publicist Bob Goodman, promoter Akihiko Honda, journalist Hugh McIlvanney and broadcaster Larry Merchant. [details]

Seeing him vote for Ottke makes remember why I don't read this guy's articles anymore.

Lopez, Lora, and Curry: NO. Sven Ottke: YES

I hope you know Lopez defeated Olivares, Kotey, Castillo, and O'Grady while being an all action fight.

Lora has Zaragoza, Vazquez, and Davlia 2x.

I'm not even gonna post Curry's accomplishments.

Are you really gonna put a fighter that has numerous questionable (gift) decisions like Ottke over them? I hope the other voters don't take the same style over substance route.

I have to echo the thoughts of the posters before me I'm afraid; Ottke should never be voted into the hall of fame. The guy got so many gift decisions and blatantly benefited from home cooking that I find it very hard to consider him seriously.

It is a very weak ballot this year and Ottke getting votes is a sign of that fact.

            - I would give the Prince as yes as well, but I don't think Myung-Woo Yuh had a hall of fame career to be honest.

                Hall of Fame

It seems to me that the writer selects his choices mostly depending on how many title fights they had and won. Red Lopez, Dave Sands, Pone Kingpetch Peter Kane, and several others are more deserving of selection that some of the writer's.

They were all much better in THEIR weihtclasses, than, say, Lennox Lewis, who was nothing, if not boring, enlived occasionally by very slick fouls.

My choice would be Mexican warrior, Gilberto Roman who was 2 time WBC super flyweight champion between 86 & 89..

                  Why?

He had over 60 fights, and was never KTFO
He was a mean puncher with 35 wins inside
During his first spell as champ, he made 7 successful defenses
During his second spell, he defended 5 times, all in good company
He had 17 title fights, compiling a record of 13-3-1..

He beat men such as 2 weight champ, Sugar Baby Rojas (twice), Frank Cedeno, Kiyoshi Hatanaka, Israel Contreras, Jorge Ramirez, just to mention a few..

Sadly, he died in a car crash, shortly after retirement & in my opinion, should be voted in.. Unlike cowardly Sven, most of his defenses were in the opponents back yard..

how this guy has a vote for HOF consideration makes me completely lose faith in boxing media and the credibility of hof inductees
