Comments Thread For: BoxingScene roundtable: Who will be the surprise boxing package in 2025?

Boxing and its fighters have a habit of surprising us. Stars emerge from relative obscurity, underdogs triumph in big fights, startling progress is made by an up-and-comer, or a fading star steps back into the light. Who will be your surprise package of 2025?

Opetaia will prove to the boxing world & In particularly to the yank & Brit’s who hate praising anyone not related to their homeLands that greatness comes from anywhere . Also get ready heavyweight Teremoana Jr .

Beterbiev starts much faster and takes out Bivol in the first half of the rematch.

I think Opetaia is easily the best cruiser weight and the one whose fights I most want to see. I was unaware that he and Pacquiao, GGG, Inoue, Beterbiev, Bivol, Usyk, etc., etc., are under appreciated by my fellow Americans.

I’m American and have always had positive things to say about Opetaia.

Won't be a surprise if it gets accurately predicted.

              I'll go with Jose Valenzuela

He's also built himself back up after a couple losses; recently put on a clinical effort against Pitbull.

Now he's in with Russell, who although is coming off a loss, appears to be the heavy fan pick from what I could tell. Doesn't seem like Valenzuela has registered with fans again yet.

The fight with Russell will be his third with Robert Garcia I think. If he does win that fight, and depending on how he does it ..he could end up as one PBC's hottest fighters. That's saying something because there isn't much momentum to be had at current PBC given their sparse events, so anyone who can make noise is really doing something.

Beats Russell, maybe get him De Los Santos rematch Tank, Ryan, plenty of good fights that could be made this year.

I think Bakole. People are under estimating the significance of that last win. More to the point , any HW that keeps winning will get opportunities that come around fast with Turki as he is invested in HWs. If Brandon F beats Fulton that might be his only fight this year so its difficult to turn into a surprise package with one fight.

We need to see Bakole against some real and proven competition. Kayabel, Zhang, Parker, all qualify. The problem is that Anderson was so hyped as the Next Big Thing, Bakole's spark-out might not mean as much as we want it to. I like Bakole but we need to see more.

I'd like to see Itauma go get that Pulev regular belt, defend against a can then go in with a top 15 heavyweight to set up 2026.
Usyk only has a 2nd undesputed fight left this year against the Dubois Parker winner. 2025 is an intermediate year of setting up Usyk mandatories or empty belt season 2026.
