Comments Thread For: Gutting Through It: 11 Boxers Who Fought Through Significant Injuries

Every boxer who enters the ring puts their health, if not their life, on the line -- though boxing fans often reserve the title of "warrior" for only a select few prizefighters. "I'm a warrior," Andre Ward once said, offering a logical alternative perspective. "But people only give the 'warrior' tag if you get cut every other fight or you're in a Fight of the Year candidate every other fight." He has a point. "Warrior" is a badge of courage that all boxers proudly wear to commemorate them risking their health and safety to entertain fans of the sport. But not all badges are the same size. Ward earned his badge by consistently fighting quality opposition. Other fighters earn their badge by fighting through injury.

This missed Jai Opetaia fighting through a jaw broken on both sides to beat a very tough Maris Briedis for the Ring belt.

For UK fans, Danny Williams knocking out Mark Potter after fighting with only one arm due to a dislocated right shoulder is memorable, Audley Harrison finally showing some heart to knock out Michael Sprott in the final round after injuring his shoulder and special mention must go to Kell Brook for going up 2 division bravely fighting on against prime GGG with a smashed in eye socket, he obviously didn't get close to the final bell but was still swinging when the towel came in.

Which was nowhere like Arthur Abrahams jaw vs Edison Miranda.

Sunny Edwards recently went through quite a few rounds against Bam with an orbital fracture.

Different time period but honorable mentions.

Margarito vs Cotto first fight was bad. Julio Chavez Sr vs Melvick Taylor first fight bad beating.

Mostly bad choices. Mexican fighters have been in bloodbaths, broken jaws, etc. and fighting like nothing and are not mentioned. This article seems biased.

It shows the downsides to this sport that all these fighters fought with significant injuries.

Could you imagine an NFL or NBA player having their face ripped open and they spend 60 seconds applying pressure and clotting chemicals then tell them to get back out on the court/field?

Every single fight means so much, they only fight twice or once a year and a loss even if due to injury has a massive impact on their career. if it was like the UFC where a loss doesnt harm their career as much then way more corners would be stopping fights. Mainstream sports like NFL or NBA if the stub their toe they are benched the rest of the game.
