Comments Thread For: Chris Colbert planning world-title run at 130lbs

Chris Colbert has a plan to become a world champion, by moving down in weight to 130lbs. The Brooklyn native, 28, is scheduled to fight on ProBox TV for the first time, against the 24-year-old Omar Salcido Gamez of Mexico, in a lightweight contest 10 months after suffering a sixth-round knockout loss to Jose Valenzuela. The defeat by Valenzuela came in the rematch that followed him previously winning a unanimous decision over 10 rounds.

Who could he fight at Super Featherweight in PBC though? Hector Garcia? Lamont Roach? Mark Magsayo?

Colbert is not good (enough). He was a gimmick boxer, who colored his hair, that Showtime/PBC tried to manufacture into a star. Their experiment failed. I don't think he'll be a major player in the division when it's all said and done.

That light hitting, shoeshine style just doesn’t work against top guys. You need a certain minimum amount of physical strength and power to keep opponents honest. Maybe he doesn’t get smacked around as much at 130.

This guy should fight on Probox TV. These people's activity is abysmal. Now you see them, now you don't. Just retire man. This sport needs new breed of fighters. Fighters that want to fight 3 times a year.

You nailed it 100%. Colberts moment in the sun is over already. He was never going to be who they were trying to manufacture. He's just not good enough. If he was trying to punch his way out of a wet paper bag , I'd bet on the bag. He's not strong enough to compete at a high level. He could build a career as a gatekeeper but that's about it.

I might give this guy a second look, but choosing to be inactive doesn't bode well for me. Good to see him make this effort on Probox TV. He should have done it earlier.
