  • What could had Mando Ramos achieved if his career wasn't derailed by his personal problems?

Recently watched a short documentary made by Rich The Fight Historian. Retails his achievements and personal problems outside the ring involving drinking and drug addiction.

Armando Ramos was an American professional boxer and the former two-time WBC and WBA Lightweight Champion. He was born in Long Beach, California. Armando "Mando" Ramos was one of the most popular fighters in Southern California during the 1960s. Ramos was an outstanding amateur.

At age 18, he had defeated the reigning Jr. Lightweight Champion Royal Kobashi (51-6-3) in a non title bout.

At age 20 he became the youngest lightweight champion in a rematch against Carlos Teo Cruz (38-12-2) who was coming off wins against beaten Frankie Narvaez, HOF Carlos Ortiz, and Mando Ramos himself in the first match. (Prior Edwin Rosario breaking the record, who attained it by being 48 days younger.)

Seven months later he went to Yoshiaki Numata (37-5-2), who had beaten one of Phillipines's best proffesional boxers up to date, Flash Elorde.

At age 21 after a TKO loss to Panamanian Ismael Laguna (61-6-1) by late TKO, he went to beat Hall of Famer Sugar Ramos (54-4-3) who was 29 years old by split decision. It was the fight of the year.

At Age 22 after a very controversial loss in Spain against Pedro Carrasco (103-1-2), he had won the immediate first rematch in California and the second rematch in Spain by split decision.

At age 23 he was no longer the same fighter as he was physically to worn down by the toll of his drug abuse. Being upset by unknown Chango Carmona and mostly competing and losing against low level competition.

At such a young age he could competed in the late 70s and early 80s in the lightweight and light welterweight division.
