  • Comments Thread For: Checkmate: Usyk Several Moves Ahead Of The Gypsy King

A good chess player, it has been said, is someone who can recall patterns, understands tactics and strategies and can envision openings and endgames. One might ask what that has to do with one of the great heavyweight fights of modern times, but if you look behind the bloody display of skill, inspect the I.Q behind the desire and look at the shifts in momentum of a tumultuous struggle in Saudi Arabia, you could be excused for thinking the new undisputed heavyweight champion of the world, Oleksandr Usyk, might have been able to imitate his success in the ring while sat at a chessboard.

I don’t know- I think what impressed me most was that Fury hit him with some withering body shots in the middle rounds that would have dropped if not stopped most guys and Uysk just was able to power through that and still be dangerous

Rather than technique I think it came down to his durability

        Blah, blah, blah...."

        Who is this for?

A 12 grader or some ones, wife, mother, or girlfriend who wants to learn how to play chess?

What we miss is quality writing but instead of that we are full of fans who praise their favourite as a 90's teenage girl her favourite boyband. So Usyk is one of the fighters with a solid number of disgusting fans. And sorry - "hater" doesn't work here because I am not talking about him but a certain type of his fans.

I know some boxers play chess but I think it has almost nothing to do with boxing. If you play a lot of chess - I don't think it helps you think ahead in boxing at all. You just get good at chess. Chess-thinking is slow too.

I think playing a versus fighter videogame at a high level would probably help more. The skills are actually more transferable - setting up reads/patterns etc. And the thinking needs to be ultra fast

Any truth to the rumors his excellency leaned over to Joshua after the 9th round and whispered “tough luck, buddy. But I hear Charr is available”

I am not sure he was several moves ahead. He landed the most important shot of the fight. I imagine that fight would have been quite even or even different if it was not for that shot. It was on the money.
To all haters of either fighter- these dudes fought the exact opposite of chumps. We should be thankful they put on a great fight! It took a load of nuts to train wicked hard for months and get in the ring in front of the whole world.

I also think that there will be no rematch. I believe this will be like Lewis - Vitali where I believe Lewis simply did not want to put that level of effort into another war. The main difference here is that Lennox won that fight. Fury knows how many dudes in the past have had another guy that has their number and that would be an insane amount of work to potentially end your career with 2 losses.
