  • Comments Thread For: Canelo Returns To The Top Spot: BoxingScene Competition Index Update

With one quarter to go in 2023, the latest big win from boxing's biggest star returns him to the top spot in the competition index. Saul Alvarez made easy work of then-undisputed junior middleweight champion Jermell Charlo on the last day of September. Now three quarters of the way through 2023, it remains to be seen what big fights will solidify and occur to further shake things up.

Once again, crold1 puts out a fair index. Can't argue with the majority of it. Although it will trigger some here on NSB.

Saul Alvarez defeated his third consecutive opponent found as champion or in the top ten of their division according to TBRB or Ring Magazine. Going back to his victory over Callum Smith in December 2020, Alvarez’s six ranked wins are the most in the sport over the last three years. A loss to highly ranked light heavyweight bad ass Dmitry Bivol barely hurts at this point as Alvarez’s burst of activity versus the COVID period continues to count. In eight starts over the last three years, only Avni Yildirim was unranked.
That's the key people are ignoring. Canelo is fighting and beating top guys and champions. And Yildirim was a mandatory if I recall.

      Haney - YES:

fifth consecutive victory over a lightweight ranked top ten by Ring and/or TBRB was his toughest of the bunch.
Inoue - YES, though I have him above Haney:

seven were ranked in the top five at bantamweight or junior featherweight by TBRB, Ring, or both.
      Beterbiev - YES:

third consecutive top ten win at light heavyweight and fourth in his last five starts.
He's quality. I'm not sure I would have him above Tank:

one of only four fighters (along with Alvarez, Haney, and Junto Nakatani) to have five or more rated wins in the last three calendar years.
Jermell, I wouldn't have listed at all. But I understand why.

Crawford should definitely be above Tank at this point. The numbers don't make sense there.

I wouldn't list Teofimo yet, and it's a bit too soon for Teraiji.

If we're ignoring heavyweights then so be it.

I get this but if you watched this fight Charlo didn’t fight like a champion. He fought like a sparring partner not trying to hurt the champ before a big fight.

He was there for the check and to give Canelo rounds without taking any damage.

Maybe, but that's not Canelo's fault, just like Spence not showing up is not Crawford's fault.

          We need to be consistent.

If people big up Crawford for the version of Spence that showed up, we need to big up Canelo for the version of Charlo that showed up. And Charlo was a undisputed champion that didn't fight like one. Not Canelo's fault, but he gets the credit.

Remember, people upped Teofimo for the version of Loma that showed up, but didn't up Sandor Martin for the version of Teofimo that showed up and didn't up Devin for the version of Loma that showed up.

          We need to be consistent.

Everywhere I see the top, the owner is Canelo.

yeah this is nonsensical. you are counting charlo's ranking at 154 for canelo? what about charlo's ranking at 168? oh yeah hes not ranked there yet canelo still gets a ton of points? tank gets a ton of points for fighting smaller guys moving up or fighting garcia at 140 where hes not ranked with a rehydro clause? so silly. this only encourages fighters to cherry pick guys not in their divisions. look i got 8 points for fighting a teeny tiny man not even in my division!

Keep that same energy as Crawford keeps talking about fighting Tank.

thats a dumb fight and tank will never do that, if tank wont fight a top 5 fighter in his division, hes not going to fight crawford

It's not about Tank, it's about Crawford, who's really the one calling for it repeatedly. How about you **** on Crawford for calling out lightweights instead of defending his belts against Stankonia or Boots?
