  • Comments Thread For: Joshua Praises Derrick James, Downplays Time with Ex-Trainer Robert Garcia

Anthony Joshua is effusive about his time so far working with trainer du jour Derrick James. He can't say the same for his previous coach, Robert Garcia. In a recent interview, staged after the official announcement of Joshua's Aug. 12 fight against Dillian Whyte at the O2 Arena in London, the former heavyweight champion sung the praises of his current coach while saying less than complimentary things about his last one.

This dude is only talking shiet because Robert criticized him after the Usyk fight. Everyone saw a much better Joshua in the 2nd Usyk fight, that’s mostly because of Robert.

Needs to dominate and spark out washed PED mediocrity Whyte to show he’s still a player

Joshua really is saying nothing wrong here, Garcia did not have enough time to impact Joshua's performance enough 'Even still Garcia for me improved Joshua, his effort vs Usyk II was skill for skill one of his best performances of his career in terms of pure boxing'.

It was not Joshua's best performances, but it definitively skill for skill was not one of his worst 'He fought Usyk at his own game and made it competitive, it was not a super easy fight for Usyk'.

Anthony Joshua skill for skill has been Usyk's toughest fight at Heavyweight 'The fact of the matter is, Joshua was in that fight right up until round 10'.

People may reference the Chisora vs Usyk, but anyone who has watched Chisora entire career 'Pretty much knew from round 3 on wards the fight was going to move towards Usyk'.

Joshua vs Usyk II, it was only come round 10 did Usyk then start to switch into another gear 'And really claim the win in that fight' etc.

Aj said it himself, he was going to do thing's his way anyway.
More a case i think of the delusional Aj not listening & more sour g****s on Ajs part as he's not used to criticism from his 26 yes man team.

Aj was as loose as he's been since Klitschko under Garcia & bigger & more wooden than ever against Franklin.

I’m not so sure if Joshua is at the age and stage in his career where he should be trying to learn too many new things or change too much. I think with a fighter like him, where he’s at, it’s about having a good camp, getting him into great shape, and building confidence and momentum.

I have always felt that Robert Garcia had a special talent in his bro Mikey. It was a lot more to do with Mikey's natural power and his ring IQ than anything Robert was doing. He obviously can teach basics and knows the sport, and he is not a terrible trainer. But compared to a guy like Freddie Roach or other high caliber trainers, he doesn't seem like some mastermind

Joshua will not ever be totally right from the Ruiz loss. Ever. Garcia tried to turn him into a intuitive thinking boxer against Usyk, which was all wrong for that fight. Everyone says "well Joshua looked improved". Sure, he took a little less damage and boxed a little smarter. But for God's sake, AJ has big power and he is physically a beast. He was never going to outbox Usyk. He needed to impose his will on Usyk and hurt him and stop him.

In Garcia's defense AJ is a head case now and he was hesitant to try and hurt Usyk at all, scared of another equilibrium shot like Ruiz hit him with. If James can get AJ over the mental hump, AJ could make a comeback. I don't see it as likely, but it is possible.

Styles make trainers. Garcia, James, Hunter, Mcguigan, Richardson, Roach ,Shields and Edwards all seem to connect with their guys as if they did some kind of vulcan mind meld. The problem is always going to be paring styles.

If it can be done I believe Hunter, James and Edwards are best suited because their students seem to trust them enough to step though boundaries. In the end, Anthoney is still learning but if it's going to happen, it's going to happen right here and now.... or not at all.

Not saying these guys are Vulcans but I've never seen any of these guys in the same room with Spock, kinda makes me wonder...
