Comments Thread For: Andy Cruz, 2020 Olympic Gold Medalist, Scores Landslide Win Over Juan Carlos Burgos In Pro Debut

The pro journey has begun for one of the most accomplished amateur boxers in recent memory. Andy Cruz enjoyed a successful pro debut with a ten-round, unanimous decision win over former title challenger Juan Carlos Burgos. Judges Gerard White (100-90), Dave Dejonge (100-90) and Rose Gross (98-92) scored for Cruz in their DAZN-aired co-feature Saturday evening from Masonic Temple in Detroit, Michigan.

The most impressive part was that he was completely fresh going into the 10th round. Outstanding stamina for someone who spent a career fighting 3 rounders. Power isn't huge. But he seemed to hurt Burgos more if not just as much as Haney and Davis did. Not sure how the judge scored any round for Burgos.

I wanted to wait and how pro debut goes first, but Andy is ready for anyone and if he's making 135, watch out.

Yeah Cruz looked really good. Didn't get a stoppage but that's down to burgos being so durable he's one of these fighters you need a bat to take him out. But he was hurting him with body shots and he won every round easily don't know what 98-92 card was. For a debut to fight someone so experienced it's impressive and he looked like he had a really good engine aswell

Burgos is a solid first opponent. Very durable fighter. Probably not a debut opponent because that could be disastrous for a rookie. Impressive first fight

Lomachenko started a trend, made it popular to start fighting solid opponents right off the bat. The cons of this is we will see fighters less right away. The days of picking up 10 fights a year for a rookie are probably gone

Eventually, 15-20-fight careers will be the norm

I agree, very impressive opponent for a pro debutant.

I suspect he's not a huge puncher but it's hard to really judge his power v someone that's never been stopped.

He's a smart fighter that's never done 10 rounds and probably understands the chances of getting a stoppage in this fight wasn't very high, so he probably didn't want to put everything behind his shots at the expense of his stamina in a longer fight than he's used to.

I guess we will find out in coming fights about his level of power.

Both fighters had very extensive amateur careers and began their pro campaigns late. Therefore, they needed to hit the ground running. I’m very happy Andy impressed in his debut versus a worthy opponent. Looking forward to more.
