Comments Thread For: Claressa Shields: This is a Big Moment For Detroit and Myself

By Thomas Gerbasi - Maybe there won't be a Joe Frazier for Claressa Shields' Muhammad Ali. It's a recurring theme in the career of someone who is rapidly living up to her self-proclaimed status as the G.W.O.A.T. of her sport. As the saying goes, to be great, a fighter needs that dance partner to bring the great out of her. Most famously, Ali had Frazier, and while we likely would have been calling "The Greatest" just that without his three bouts against "Smokin' Joe," their trilogy enhanced what was already a stellar resume.

The face of boxing? Will she get a bigger crowd to watch her than Canelo just did?

Shields could never be the face of boxing as......

          (a) Many fans dislike her braggadocious attitude, and...

          (b) She's fought far too many tomato cans in her 13 fight career.

However, I give Shields credit for beating Marshall in her last fight. Marshall wasn't KOd or outclassed - so she isn't Shields' George Foreman

BTW Shields pretending that she's the female version of the great Muhammad Ali is just the type of thing that many boxing fans can't stand about her.

The article also neglects to mention that Shields turned down a huge financial offer to take the rematch with Marshall in a stadium fight in the UK this Summer.

This was why Marshall was left with the Crews-Dezurn fight at super-middleweight.

She's fought everybody she could fight and humiliated all of them

I remember when a lot of folks were saying Christina Hammer was gonna beat her, then Savannah Marshall was gonna shut her up.

Fact is, there aint nobody in a weight class near hers that is even competitive with her at this point, so she has every right to call herself the GOAT

And why would she fight Marshall in the UK again, considering she already beat her soundly in her hometown.

Marshall can come to America if she wants a rematch.

Since when does a challenger get to keep dictating when and where somebody fights?

Nobody holds the fact that Floyd did'nt have Frazier against him.

Folks hold against him that he was risk averse and fought guys before or after their primes or flat out avoided people with difficult styles.

That's not Shields. She's fought everybody they claimed would beat her and soundly.

People don't like her because they don't like a Black woman who's confident and acting just like 90% of male athletes do.

She's no different than Ali, Floyd, tyson Fury, Conor McGregor or the 100 other male athletes that talk shxt.

She’s not the face of boxing. I don’t like that she claims that.

It would be better if she claimed to be the face of women’s boxing instead…but even that is questionable. Katie Taylor drew almost 20,000 at Madison Square Garden.

This clown may be a good fighter... but that pompous attitude will be her demise eventually.
She's be wise to just STFU and talk about 1/10th as much as she does in leading up to fights.

The fight is in 2 days, and there's still many tickets left. I understand wanting to bring fight-nights back to your home, but she doesn't have the necessary drawing power. For as much **** as Crawford gets for his PPV numbers, it seems like he's always done good business in his hometown.

Shields needs to accept that the big $$$ is abroad, go chase it while you still can.
