  • Comments Thread For: De La Hoya's Latest Protege Takes Aim at Pay-Per-View Big Time

By Lyle Fitzsimmons - A decade ago, Oscar De La Hoya told anyone who would listen that a then-fledgling Canelo Alvarez would become the biggest thing in boxing. And based on a perusal of pound-for-pound lists and pay-per-view marquees, he was correct. These days, the Golden Boy kingmaker is working 24 hours a day to spread the word that another captivating 20-something, Ryan Garcia, is ready to assume the throne.

Oscar was a great fighter and had some big wins. Yes, he lost to a bigger Hopkins, and when past his prime, to Pacquiao. But he was excitement personified, in the ring.

Ad a promoter, I've had my criticism, but he's got a potentially big star in Ryan. I favour Tank, but we just don't know I guess, that's why it's fascinating.

Ryan also has a bit of a beef with Oscar, but they're still together. Obviously Oscar wouldn't be saying Canelo is or was stubborn, if still promoted by him.

Ryan has the marketability, but he needs to win, or if lose, not decisively, in order to become a bigger star. A knockout loss would be catastrophic.

When I was a kid getting my tail kicked in the schoolyard, I learned that the lanky, skinny-looking wiry people should be avoided. Who knows what will happen, but I tend to favor Garcia.

If I were Davis’ trainer, I’d be telling him to come in low and crouched with a peekaboo guard and then target Garcia’s solar plexus and liver continuously. There’s a good chance he could win the fight right there, and if not, it would eventually make Garcia drop his guard.

Ppl here hate on Oscar but he's proven to be a great promoter....might be the first fighter to be inducted into the hall of fame as a boxer and promoter.

            Oscar de la Left Hook.

            Much respect.

If Garcia looks good in a losing effort, boxing wins.

"Instagram is the new gold medal." Wow! That's kind of sad.

Look at you all but hurt because I called you on on youre canelo hate for rehydration but not Tank.lol

Nope Haymon isn't and let me tell you why so far the only guy he can say he "built" is Tank. The rest of the stars he had were mostly GBP guys that he and Schaeffer stole.

Also haymon comes from the school of Floyd "stack everything in you're favor judges, weight, refs, gloves, ring size etc to have all the advantages" kinda hard for me to respect that type of fyckery.

                  That's why he's not.

Now I'll turn the tables is Oscar a great promoter? He built up Canelo to what he is. Virgil, Ryan although not house hold name could be one day.
