  • Why Neither Fury Nor Usyk (Nor Anyone Else) Are All-Time Great HWs In This Era

There seems to be some confusion in what the differences are between a Hall of Fame(HOF) fighter and an All-Time Great(ATG) fighter.

A Hall of Fame (HOF) fighter is a fighter who is one of the best fighters of his generation.

An All-Time Great (ATG) fighter is a fighter who is one of the best fighters of all-time either in his/her weight class or in a P4P sense.

The way I see it, there's 3 ways to become an all-time great fighter.

    1. Beat a lot of other all-time great fighters (or at least HOF) fighters.

    2. Have a long championship reign with lots of defenses

    3. Demolish everybody in your path relatively easy.

Now, the 1st method is the "Ali Method"

He beat fellow ATGs in Sonny Liston (twice), Joe Frazier (twice), and George Foreman (once). And even beat some HOFs like Bob Foster, Archie Moore, Ken Norton, and Floyd Patterson (when they were past primes). He's the epitome of an All-Time Great fighter who fought everybody and beat just about everybody.

The 2nd Method is the "Joe Louis Method", where he defended the HW title 25 times over 12 years (including 4 years missed during WWII). His resume though not as impressive as Ali's, has some HOFs in it like Joe Walcott, Max Schmelling, Max Baer, and James J. Braddock

The 3rd Method is the "Mike Tyson Method", where you just demolish whoever's in front of you, even if they're not all that great (or a little past their primes).

This is the most controversial method, hence so many fans (most of whom weren't there) doubting Tyson's ATG status these days.

Now, none of these methods apply to either Usyk or Fury.

At the moment, neither Fury nor Usyk have had long or dominant reigns as champion.

Now, Fury has beaten one definite HOF in Klitchsko & another possible in Wilder, but outside of that there's not a whole lot there and he's not knocking out guys in 1 or 2 rounds or approaching 20 defenses like Klitschko.

Usyk has beat 1 possible HOF in Joshua, but thus far hasn't defended his titles against anyone else and hasn't demolished anyone.

These guys are both HOFs definitely, but not quite at the ATG level.
