The great run of Welterweight fights has finally ended.

Welterweight has arguably been the best division in boxing for as long as I can remember.

In the 80’s we had: Leonard vs Duran 1 & 2, Leonard vs Hearns, Curry and Starling fought twice, Curry vs McCrory, Curry vs Honeyghan, Starling and Breland fought twice.

In the 90’s it arguably got even better: Whitaker vs McGirt twice, Whitaker vs Chavez, De La Hoya vs Whitaker, De La Hoya vs Chavez 2, Trinidad vs Whitaker, De La Hoya vs Quartey, culminating in De La Hoya vs Trinidad at the end of the decade.

The 2000’s was the best of all with: De La Hoya vs Mosley, Forrest vs Mosley 1 & 2, Forrest vs Mayorga 1 & 2, Spinks vs Mayorga, Judah vs Spinks 1 & 2, Mayweather vs Judah, Mayweather vs Hatton, Cotto vs Judah, Cotto vs Mosley, Pacquiao vs De La Hoya, Cotto vs Margarito, Mayweather vs Marquez and Pacquiao vs Cotto.

The 2010’s continued the run with: Mayweather vs Mosley, Ortiz vs Berto, Pacquiao vs Mosley, Pacquiao vs Marquez 3 & 4, Pacquiao vs Bradley 1, 2 & 3, Bradley vs Marquez, Maidana vs Broner, Mayweather vs Maidana 1 & 2, the long awaited Mayweather vs Pacquiao super fight, Thurman vs Garcia, Spence vs Porter, Pacquiao vs Thurman.

However in the 2020’s the division seems to be dying. Spence vs Crawford failed to materialise and Spence is seemingly moving up to 154. Ortiz and Ennis look promising but aren’t the finished article yet and who knows when or if they will ever fight. The great run at 147 has finally ended.

Not just 147. It seems like boxing overall is weaker then ever. There's very few killers out there right now that can hang with any of the best from different eras.

great post, but you left out Simon Brown. He was a problem as well.. He lost to Starlon and Mcgirt. These guys today just don't want to fight each other and it's really bad when their fan bases defend this foolishness. You got a guy like Boots that have been a pro for 7 f*kin years and haven't fought another top 10 fighters yet!!! Both Crawford and Spence on their bs and 135 is just a wasted division. Seriously, what is the point of having 5 belts per weight class(WBA has 2) and 17 weight classes but we can only get 3 big fights a year in the entire sport? the sad thing is that the 115 division and women's boxing seek the big fights and make it happen, but then they are criticized for it by youtubers that make every excuse NOT to look at them. I guarantee you that 85% of the new youtube content is about Spence and Crawford. A goddamn fight that isn't happening.

No top young talent is fighting other top young talents until multi millions can be made. Often years too late.

Smaller weight classes are better in this regard

Floyd said in that interview with RA the Rugged Man, "when I leave, the sport is dead."

Damn it Floyd, you were right again. We need another young phenom to come and bring it back to life.

This is why I cheer for underdogs in fights. I absolutely hate keith Thurman with a passion, but I'm hoping he knocks errol Spence the *** out along with Crawford losing his next fight so we can move on from these 2 clowns.

Probably should have added Brown vs Blocker. That was an epic card. Tyson vs Ruddock 1, JCC, Duran got upset by Lawlor and the Welterweight unification.

                Why do you hate KT?

I quite like the fact he’s an oddball who backpacks around Asia.

                Too many ‘tough guy’ personalities

Can't really compare decades to this when 20 and 21 were affected by covid

Guaranteed if that DeSoto drunk goes up to 154 and those belts are vacated, Crawford will attempt to gather them for his 2nd undisputed. Wilder was trashed by Fury. They know exactly what Spence has to face vs Crawford's skillsets and he isn't a 400 lb junkie. I'd be real happy to see Crawford 2x undisputed knocking on Charlo's door. Unfortunately, same of bull bc he is PBC too.
