Comments Thread For: Robert Garcia Says Anthony Joshua Needs To Train in The US, 'Get Out of Comfort Zone,' To Improve

Robert Garcia thinks Anthony Joshua could benefit from a change of scenery. The well-regarded trainer from Riverside, California, linked up with the former heavyweight titlist from London earlier this year ahead of the latter's rematch with Oleksandr Usyk in Saudi Arabia. Garcia, in tandem with Joshua's longtime second Angel Fernandez, helped put together a strategy for Joshua to defeat the skilled southpaw from Ukraine. In the end, it was not enough, as Usyk would go on to win on points to retain his WBO, WBA, and IBF titles.

I'm not a boxing trainer, and Garcia is very highly regarded, so I'm sure he has a very good point.

But thinking about what he said about comfort zone, I don't think it's necessarily the location and the other stuff.

Mayweather trained near his home in Las Vegas, so some would say that was comfortable. But you can train near home perhaps, but still learn new things, and not be in a comfort zone in the gym. Just a thought.

A top trainer could of course give Joshua some new tips and tricks, and it's got to be the right fit.

There's also a ceiling for most fighters though, how good or great they can be. A few are legends where the sky's the limit.

Read between the lines. Joshua is lazy.

Floyd actually had boxing IQ, a consistent trainer, and never stopped training.

AJ and Floyd are nothing alike. AJ is too scared or full of himself to change because he thinks he's already the best.
That's why Robert is saying he needs to change it up, spar different people and crap like that.

What does that mean? That he needs to find a trainer that will do what he says....as opposed to finding a trainer that will ask him to do what they believe he needs to in order to win?

He probably pumps more weights than boxing. Everyone else pumps weights as well but you don't see them with the bodybuilder body because weight training for actual boxers is just to get stronger.

“And you cannot say, ‘Oh, I don’t want to spar because I’m tired.’ ‘Oh, I didn’t sleep enough last night, so I don’t want to train today.’ - this bit here sounds like the most poignant bit of all, does AJ not show up some days like "fúck it CBA today"

If that's the case it's what I feared he has a bunch of yes men around him and he's looking for more yes men to add to his team, it's unlikely he'll find any.

He had a good thing with Rob McCrappen as he often ends up with someone mentally fragile/weak like Froch and AJ so it was a perfect match and i'm sure he caters to the aforementioned fragility.

He was calling him a lazy, untrainable know it all, in a super duper nice way.

I thought it would be a good fit style wise with Garcia, still think that. I agree with what's he's saying about the comfort zone, but then wasn't that your job to enforce that standard? You are the one who has trained the multiple world champs, not that Fernandez guy who was lead in the corner.

Whatever enthusiasm I had about AJ in the rematch was immediately zapped when I saw Garcia was not the main voice in the corner after round 1 - he had a dumb look on his face while as leaned in thru the ropes, always waiting for the other guy to stop talking. I thought OK next round, he'll get in there, but he never did. To make it worse, he was the one stroking AJ's ego, telling him he's winning. Garcia is one of my favorite trainers so it made it all the more dubious. I wanted him to take charge and slap both of them Atlas or Steward style!

I'm not in tune with AJ's psyche but some other posters nailed it on this, that Garcia was just gonna take the check and not going to be able to do much. I think it could still be a good pairing but Garcia has to tell him leave all the baggage or he's not doing it

This is Rocky 3 all over again. It sounds like what Joshua really needs right now is some pumping 80s tunes and a training montage to help him rediscover the eye of the tiger.
