Comments Thread For: Lomachenko Tips His Cap To Ortiz: "Jamaine Is A Top Fighter, Good Fighter"

While lauded and revered for his overall boxing skills, a shroud of mystery covered Vasiliy Lomachenko. Having proved that he's still amongst the lightweight division's elite following consecutive victories, the 34-year-old stepped away from the sport he loves in lieu of the ongoing Russian invasion in his native land of Ukraine.

I thought Loma won comfortably. It was competitive in some places, but shoe shines at the sound of the clapper or holding and hitting doesn't win a round. However, Loma looked off this fight, especially in the beginning. He allowed Ortiz to get his punches off on him. I don't even remember seeing that in the Lopez fight. I also think Ortiz is a great fighter and very awkward. He gives opponents more looks than a peeping Tom. Definitely hard to get his timing down with so many changes.

Despite what the odds makers have the fight now, despite Haney being favored to win, I'm still picking Loma to beat Haney because what Ortiz did to cause Loma issues is very specific to Ortiz. The explosive combination punching, constantly tripling up the jab and leaping in, the rough house inside punches; all of these are things that Ortiz does a lot and Haney doesn't ever do. In fact, Loma was doing very good on the outside. His problem was denying the clinch in the first half of the fight. That last one is something Haney does, so will be interesting.

I agree with pretty much all you said, but the one issue I see with Haney is his size along with his movement and reach, all very big obstacles for Loma, Id like to see Loma win Im not keen on Haney he is like a soft punching Floyd, May had dog in him Haney doesn't have any.

Yeah. Good point. Also, Floyd had many different tools in his belt. He's such a more dynamic fighter than Haney, giving his opponents different looks. He could fight on the back foot and he could also get in a high guard and walk his opponent down. Also, Floyd didn't just dip to the right to avoid punches. He'd set up counters with the pull counter, slipping to the inside, controlling the opponent's punch selection. Haney only does a few of these things, not all of them and not nearly as well. Floyd is (was) much faster than Haney. I don't like the comparisons of Haney to Floyd. They're different fighters.

I see some glimpses of May in Haney but Devon will never be as complete as Mayweather or have half his ability to adjust in the moment as Floyd could.

Jamaine gave Loma a decent fight. I can't fault Top Rank much for the matchup, it wasn't all one-sided.

Loma has had a great career, achieved a lot in not that many fights. He is probably going to exit boxing after a lucrative fight or two against Haney.

I see more of Mayweather in Stevenson than I see in Haney.

THIS!!!!! Never got the Floyd comparison even though Senior had been hyping him up. He's not on the level of Money Floyd forget even comparing him to Pretty Boy Floyd as that is an entirely different stratosphere!

Stevenson looks more like the older version of Mayweather. Mayweather from jr lightweight to we alter weight threw bombs and got people out of there or tried. He was a small welterweight and with his then brittle hands he adjusted his style to probably the best style in boxing history for winning fights with someone with next level reflexes.
Haney’s style doesn’t remind me of Mayweather at all. His style is more like a male claressa shields
