  • Comments Thread For: Abner Mares Returns, Fights To Majority Draw With Miguel Flores

Abner Mares was fit to be tied in his hometown comeback fight. The 2004 Mexican Olympian and former three-division titlist was unable to secure a victory in his first fight in more years, fighting to a majority draw with Miguel Flores. Judge Rudy Barragan (96-94) had Mares ahead, overruled by judges Patrick Russell (95-95) and Zachary Young (95-95) who scored the lightweight fight even after ten rounds in their Fox Sports Pay-Per-View undercard bout Sunday evening at ******.com Arena in Los Angeles.

Thought Miguel pulled it off 6-4. I'm ok with the draw and I know that the 4 year layoff and losing weight quickly played a part in Abner's stamina and performance. If Mares was active he would've knocked out Flores in less than 6 especially with the way he looked after the first 2 rounds he just couldn't keep that output and I think Flores outworked him even though the punch stats said otherwise.

Time to hang them up for Mares. He didn’t look terrible but a fighter of his calibre should be dealing with Flores comfortably. He has no business fighting above 126 too.

I would have docked Mares a point for excessive holding. He's an 8 round fighter now. Based on that, he's probably up next for Tank.

Some guys just need to leave this boxing stuff alone and mares is one of them. The guy has won his world titles and had a decent career and has injury problems now and clearly tonight he just looked 36 years old.. He had one last go he didn't have it so time to call it a day
