  • Comments Thread For: Andre Ward Calls For 'Overhaul' Of Sanctioning Bodies: Structure As A Whole, I Don't Agree With It

Andre Ward will get to relive many fond memories of the sport as he is officially inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in June. None will be of the sanctioning bodies, or the amount of money he spent to keep the belts in his collection during his perfect pro career.

Did y'all have a stroke while writing that title or did you subcontract a seven year old to do it?

Good interview, Ward's views on his belts remind me of Tyson's "I bled for garbage" comment.

It is great to have a unified champ but it makes no financial sense. It is better to collect them and let them go since they all want their 3%. That is why superstars get the different treatment because the 3% of their purse goes long ways.

Look at the Taylor issue, fight some no name for no money and then part away 12% from a small purse. Makes no sense.

We need to just ignore those belts, and then somehow show boxing that we're ignoring them. The only way to get rid of them is to make them obselete/irrelevant.

Like he said, though, if you're young, or maybe not good enough or brave enough to win a real belt, then you want an easy belt and are willing to pay for it, cuz it brings statis and more $.

Jermell Charlo and Brian Castano for the undisputed WBA/WBC/IBF/WBO junior middleweight championship. Castano (17-1-2, 12KOs) entered as the WBO titlist and was required to pay a combined 12% of his reported $500,000 purse to the four sanctioning bodies. Charlo received a slight discount as the unified WBA/WBC/IBF champ, “only” paying a combined 11% of his reported $1,000,000 purse.

Mind Bobblin stuff right there, Andre Ward.

Yeah 3% for each sanctioning-body, whats the problem? Undisputed/12% comes around once of twice in a boxers career, not many undisputed champs will keep all the belts ; you have the option to claim the lineage and not even have to pay a single fee, IF you vacate.

But see boxers are pretty dumb for getting punched in the head.

I say the WBA did the 'Tart-Tomato' Josh Taylor a favor, the chump is now paying only 9%, but if he were more intelligent, popular and liked, he would of vacated and moved up.

I'll tell you how I would hustle the system, since I know that belts are a marketing tool that helps the networks gain subscribers, I tell them to pay my sanctioning fee otherwise I drop my belts -- I would still fight on their network, but they lose subscription, its like extortion.

1 title per weight class would make it so only the actual best fight for it. Sanctioning body rankings are garbage. They have C and D level fighters ranked as top 10. Weed out the mediocre.

But with 4 titles, plus the ****** lower titles, every top 10 ranked fighter in a weight class can be called a title holder. It’s so ******.

Very true, less belts, but it probably won't go back to the old times as in one champion per division.

If boxing was ruled by one main organisation like Dana does with the UFC, then the best would have to fight the best, no hiding behind networks and promoters.

The only thing then is, the boxers probably wouldnt get these huge paydays. You wouldn't see the millions that Mayweather and Pacquiao got, for example. There probably wouldn't be the kinds of pay that Canelo gets either.

But the sport's appeal and integrity would be greater. Although I guess many pro fighters would say legacy and all that doesn't pay the bills.

You might get my vote if you step in the ring with Charlie Zelenoff… Dinner Jacket frog would be a prime candidate to be the special guest referee.
