  • Comments Thread For: Canelo: I Like Idea Of Being Undisputed In Two Weight Classes; Really Good Thing For Legacy

Canelo Alvarez wants to become boxing's fully unified light heavyweight champion if he defeats Dmitry Bivol on May 7 in Las Vegas. The Mexican legend recognizes that achieving undisputed status in another weight class would strengthen his legacy even more than he did by winning world titles in four divisions.

Let's wait and see about tomorrow night. If he gets past Bivol it's a done deal, he will have overcome the division.

It’s interesting how Canelo’s view on undisputed has changed over the years. At 154 he didn’t care much about titles as his fight with Lara could’ve been for a belt but he chose to make the fight at 155 and never chose to face the other champions in that division other than the great Liam smith later on. At mw, he won the wbc title and then gave it away months later instead of facing his mandatory. Years later, he only needed 1 title to unify mw, he chose not fight that champion and simultaneously gave away 2 of his titles again, instead of facing his mandatories. Now it’s important to his legacy. Go figure.

Because some sadists want to see him punish GGG once again and this time in a more destructive fashion. Lol.

His “legacy” more important than the sport.

The term undisputed needs to be revisited. There should be an additional requirement such as cleaning up the weight class, at least the top 3 (Like Usyk did). Undisputed means that there is no dispute as to who is the best however, in boxing, it means that you got all the titles of which two could have been held by a B class fighter that got lucky.

If Canelo beats Bivol convincingly and assuming Beterbiev beats Joe Smith, I believe he can do it. Beterbiev is a beast but he’s aging and relatively inactive. Canelo’s activity, and general momentum in his career is going to be a factor. The same can be said for tonight’s showdown. Bivol’s career has faltered with Matchroom. He lost the momentum he had with HBO. His body language betrays the confidence he is trying to project.

I like his attitude. Some other fighters who wanted to be great but we're so concerned about giving advantages away. Their fans were also scared for their idols saying the standards for their favourite fighter is so high that they're asked to fight guys in higher weight classes, or in their opponents backyards, why should they be outweighed fight night by 10lbs or 15lbs, even though their favourite fighter said it would be easy work. Nelos fans don't cry saying why should nel o give advantages away. They welcome it

Stylistically this is a tougher fight than Beterbiev I think.

Artur is very strong but has been knocked down before, and gets hit more easily than Bivol.

So I gotta give props to Canelo, a really tough fight. If he could tko Bivol, then I have to say Canelo goes further up recognition as a boxing great.
