  • Comments Thread For: Spence: I Feel Like I'm On Borrowed Time Right Now; Can't Just Sit Around, Fight Tune-Up

Errol Spence Jr. just couldn't bring himself to do it. The unbeaten IBF/WBC welterweight champion would've been well within reason to face a less imposing opponent than Yordenis Ugas in his first fight following surgery to repair a torn left retina. Spence knew, however, that he wouldn't have been motivated to make a mandated defense of one of his 147-pound championships or to face an optional opponent.

Spence is such a throw back fighter. Wish him the best this Saturday.

It may sound messed up, but the car accident was a self-made mistake that put a hold on his career so he can't be fighting tune ups since he missed out on a good portion of his prime. He did that to himself...As for the torn retina, obviously that could have happened with or without the accident so that was just bad luck but he missed out on fighting completely in 2021 because of it. Spence has the right mindset of taking tough fights but he also has no choice because of what has taken place since the Porter fight.

Well put. A guy’s activity outside the ring effects his in ring legacy, this is inevitable.

Chances to unify titles don't come around everyday. Wasn't Ugas' sanctioning body pressuring him to fight 2 mandatories in a row? That would have pushed this fight back at least a year. It may have been a "now or never" situation for Spence to unify.

I like Spence and think he is capable of beat Ugas but I'm not optimistic about him and Bud ever fighting for undisputed

Errol has had to recover from two sickening injuries and both times he’s faced Danny Garcia and Now Yordenis Ugas as his first fight back.

If he isn’t the definition of old school mentality, I don’t know who else is!

“I knew if I fight in a tune-up or anything like that, like I could, you know, sneak snacks in at night and, you know, do other stuff cuz, you know, I’m not fighting somebody that I feel like that’s on my level.”

That sounds like self-knowledge, but it’s the exact opposite of his history.

It was doing other stuff that landed him in his own self-made trouble on the freeway.

And that happened coming off his toughest fight to date, Spence reaching deep for the close win over Porter in a FOTY candidate. So it wasn’t like he wasn’t pushing himself: he pushed himself to the limit in the ring. Unfortunately he didn’t know his limits outside it.

Good luck to him. A fantastic fighter with more than his share of demons.

Spence butchered his career. This guy squandered a fight with Pacquiao due to drunk driving one night. Smh. And cut his own career short.

It does seem like you're on borrowed time, especially the way you drive recklessly, and crashing twice as of this posting.
If you keep on crashing cars, even your fans are going to start referring to you as the crash dummy of boxing.
Since your car insurance has been suspended, or revoked it will be someone else's car that you will be illegally driving, and crashing
Crazier even than that, is the fact that you're body is suffering more damage from car crashes, and sparring session's, than you are in actual fights.
So not only are you losing time, and suffering injuries that will effect your ability to fight at your best, but your also shortening your career.
I mean how self destructive, or how bad of a driver can one possibly be?
Driving isn't a game, and cars aren't toy's even though we may think they are, it's a skill that requires focus, attention, and discipline.
