  • Comments Thread For: Oscar De La Hoya: Ryan Garcia & Joe Goossen Are 'Match Made In Heaven'

Oscar De La Hoya can relate all too well with Ryan Garcia's decision to switch trainers from Eddy Reynoso to Joe Goossen. The six-division champion and Hall of Fame fighter was cornered by a who's who of head coaches and trainers throughout his illustrious career, including Robert Alcazar (1992-2000), Jesus Rivero (1996-1997), Emanuel Steward (1997), Gil Clancy (1997-1999), Floyd Mayweather Sr. (2000-2006, 2008), Freddie Roach (2007), Nacho Beristain (2008) and Angelo Dundee (2008).

If you look at the latest YouTube clips, his camp looks like a joke.
    - Disorganized
    - He's constantly chatting with Eli Seckbach about nonsense while not focusing on what he's doing.
    - He completely ignores Goossen. One time you can hear Goossen say 'you can workout while chatting'

    Just horrible discipline in camp

Hope the discipline in camp is good. Goossen will always be linked with his training of the great Michael Nunn.

Goosen is not a great defensive trainer. Garcia gets away with a lot because of his speed and height in the division. He has flaws that will put his butt on the floor.

So he has a great jab? Let's work on that. Just forget that tooth rattling hook he ate. Ryan knows all the conditioning in the world won't make him immune. A good offense is the best defense, but face fighting isn't a good offense.

He’ll do just fine with Joe Goossen as trainer, as long as he’s still sparring against killers, which means they have to travel to spar and/or bring people in. I’m a bit concerned that on one of Garcia’s last videos he seems to be sparring with a guy who he’s giving instructions to afterwards.

That’s the thing with training at a place like the Reynoso camp, or wild card, or Robert Ortiz’s gym, or wherever else. It’s not so much the training it’s the sparring against world class guys every day which is irreplaceable. It’s one thing that you have to compete in boxing to really know just how important this is.

all he cares about is getting some good gym content for his youtube channel. you'll never see him in with anyone worth a damn so his trainer choice doesnt matter anyway, his whole 'brand' will be built on him being undefeated by fighting scrubs.

There you have tank fanboys! Cryan Garcia won't even make it to that fight, at least not undefeated. I think his best days are already behind him. Mental health, changing a whole training atmosphere, and now fishnets saying things are going great are a sure sign of the opposite. In fact, Ryan may suffer all the meltdowns Oscar had as both boxer/promoter before this training camp is over.
