Comments Thread For: Kell Brook: Timing Beats Speed, After First Two Punches I Knew The Fight Was Mine

A lot is made of speed and speed has produced many greats and helped them, srl, pac, tyson, ali, rjj.
But you don't hear much how to learn timing? it's a bit.mystical.

Not sure this makes any sense. Timing is simply about knowing exactly when to punch and executing it effectively i.e. knowing when your opponent has stepped into range to throw a shot and knowing the moment they’ve left an opening, all while having the coordination and accuracy to capitalise on it. Having great timing is literally the definition of being a great counterpuncher, and I’m sure you’ve heard this term plenty of times no? Not mystical at all.

And developing timing is a skill that all boxers strive to learn. It’s pretty much the whole purpose of things like double-ended bag drills, and the fancy pad work combinations you’ve seen fighters like Mayweather do.

Brook has always had good timing and still has. Khan still had speed but had no answer to the heavier precise punchers coming at him in abundance and couldn't find his feet after taking a hard volley only two minutes in.

THat sounds very true and correct. And khan knew Brook had good timing. And brook seemed to always know what to do against speed. But khan has never been able to know how to use his speed against people with good timing.
