Comments Thread For: British Board Confirm Boxing Will Resume, With Fans, in February

Boxing will resume in the UK in February with no ban on fans attending providing the government allows it. Robert Smith, the general secretary of the British Boxing Board of Control, says a meeting of the Board's medical committee will take place this evening (Wednesday) to formally agree that boxing will get the go-ahead to recommence on February 1.

Not sure why these jokers have the sole right to allow boxing or not. Who elected these?

Perfect opportunity for another organisation to allow and sanction boxing matches

Because having splintered authorising bodies has worked so well for boxing elsewhere...

Why the delay? Because of course things will be so much better in February. lol What a bunch of wankers... Official authorities have already stated that 1 in 15 Brits had covid last week. https://www.theguardian.com/politics...0837f382c9946b

It doesn’t work that differently elsewhere though. And until very recently this used to be the case here already, as part of the EU

Unless you’re comparing to the Sanctioning bodies like the WBA etc, but those are completely different en****** altogether. The BBBC shouldn’t have this power to stop the sport entirely, just because of a monopoly in the market

It's not a monopoly, not in any true sense. A monopoly is one body that has the power to maximise profit by controlling all that is being sold to the market. The British Boxing Board of Control is basically a regulator and nobody who sits on its board has a financial interest in the sport. The body is non-profit making.

I don't see why you feel the regulating body shouldn't have the power to regulate the sport. By definition, that's what it is there to do. It has always put safety concerns ahead of commerical concerns, and that is what they appear to be doing here.

Nor do I understand what you are suggesting by saying things don't work that differently elsewhere or what you mean by 'until very recently this used to be the case here already'. This seems both contradictory and untrue. The British Board of Boxing Control has been the sole controlling body regulating pro boxing in the UK since 1929. There is no sole centralised body in the US, for example. There are different athletics commissions for different states. That seems pretty different to me.
