Comments Thread For: Benavidez: Uzcategui's Use Of EPO Just Means He Was Really Scared, Knew What Would Happen

David Benavidez doesn't think performance-enhancing drugs would've helped Jose Uzcategui on Saturday night. Nevertheless, Benavidez believes Uzcategui should suffer serious consequences for testing positive for Recombinant erythropoietin (EPO), which forced Al Haymon's Premier Boxing Champions to remove him from the Benavidez bout two weeks ago. The former WBC super middleweight champion considers Uzcategui's PED use a sign that he lacked confidence as he prepared for a 12-round fight against a relentless, strong, unbeaten, young opponent who is sure he would've become the first fighter to knock out the Venezuelan veteran in their IBF/WBC 168-pound elimination match.

Looked this up. It is used to increase red blood cells. This increases performance. So it appears to be a PED.

I don't know if it's the same form of EPO, but I know cyclist Lance Armstrong used it for years, as do or did most of the pro cyclists anyway.

Ped usage should be punished, obviously, although I don't think it's going to make anyone a better fighter. It can increase stamina, and other drugs give them more strength, but the other thing it won't improve is a boxer's chin.

I remember when Fernando Vargas was caught, only after his fight with De La Hoya. The steroids surely made him stronger, but his chin was still pretty bad, and his skills weren't at Oscar's level.

Still, we can't have so many guys juicing.

The worst kind of cheating though is what Margarito was caught with, if I'm correct, some type of plaster of paris inserts that harden in the wraps. That's what you could say is something that qualifies for attempted murder.
