Comments Thread For: Canelo On Being Mexico's Best Ever: I Don't Want To Say That, I Just Want To Make My Own History

As much as he enjoys making history for his beloved nation, Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez remains content with being one of the very best from Mexico to ever do it. A win over Caleb Plant on November 6 will see Guadalajara's Alvarez become the first-ever boxer from Mexico--or anywhere in Latin America--to gain recognition as undisputed champion in any weight division, in the multi-belt era. The four-division champ puts his WBA/WBC/WBO super middleweight titles on the line while vying for Plant's IBF belt in their upcoming Showtime Pay-Per-View headliner at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Good cause he ain't yet, but looking at his age and what he has already done, it's a real good chance he will!

Came to say the same thing. I’m a huge Canelo fan. I think he’s probably top 5, but I’m not even certain of that. Mexico has had some badass’s Chavez, Arizmendi, Finto, hell Marquez has the most iconic knockout in the last 20 years.

Canelo has been able to benefit from fighting in a weaker era than other Mexican greats. It’s kind of like the Klitchko era at heavyweight. A good run that statistically matches up well with the greats but if you look deeper, the opposition doesn’t match up as well. For example, in my opinion Barrera and morales fighting each other 3 times in their primes along with Barrera beating Hamed while morales beat pac surpasses Canelo’s opposition. Canelo has some elite names but other than the controversial win over Lara, they were all 35 and older when he faced them and this run at 168 so far, doesn’t have one fighter that would be considered to be truly elite.

I can’t put him above Chavez, Canelo should have at least two more losses on his record but he appears to be on the top five. Beat for the actual Mexicans to decide I suppose….and no, not Mexican Americans….real Mexicans from Mexico

Canelo is definitely ascending in the direction of being the greatest Mexican ever, but he's not there yet. I can't with good conscious put him above JCC, Sanchez, MAB, Morales, JMM and Ricardo. He's got a lot of years ahead of him to claim the crown, just not yet.

I don't see him surpassing the likes of of JCC or Sanchez ever quite frankly, he's a great fighter but there is question marks around him and some of his wins and there always will be.

Abs that’s really what it goes down to, weak opposition and spurious decisions going his way by the boxing establishment that wants to keep the gravy train rolling

How are we defining elite then? Is it the p4p list? Because he’s the only one in or around his weight division that’s on it. So that’s out.

After that you have the other champions in his division and clearly he has a chance to become undisputed at 168, which has never been done.

I don’t know what else he can do besides hop in a time machine
