Comments Thread For: Mira Potkonen Ousts Maiva Hamadouche From Olympics With Split Decision Win

In a bout where both fighters forever etched their name in history, it was Mira Potkonen who gets the chance to add another chapter. The 40-year-old mother of two from Finland becomes the oldest female to both fight and win in the Olympics. It came in an entertaining split decision win over France's Maiva Hamadouche, the reigning IBF junior lightweight titlist who gave the amateurs another try.

Hamadouche is a reigning champion in the pro ranks and this 40 year old Finnish chick out performed her.. She should consider going pro for a couple years as she seems like she has a lot left in her tank as she only started boxing at 27, she could easily become a champ if hamadouche is one right now, would set her up well for the future even if she just had say like 8 fights in pro ranks or maybe a bit more depending on how quick she could get a title shot she would make bank, I know women's boxing isn't anywhere near the goldmine as men's pro boxing but she would surely make enough to make it worthwhile for her and her kids

Old age stamina was already visible. Potkonnen gassed in the mid of the second round and was just clinching in the final round.
its 3 mins in the amateurs but I dont see how she can pace herself in a 10 rounder if her opponents goes for hard pressure.

I thought potkonnen lost btw. Second round was somewhat close but edged by hamadouche. Round 3 was clear hamadouche so I dont know what the judges saw. And potkonnnen had a point deducted in r3 for excessive clinching.

To be fair they set a ridiculous pace, I don't think she would go that hard in the pro ranks, but in a short Olympic contest it's probably the best plan, and even so I was shocked at the pace they both set in the first two rounds, I had potkonnen winning first two rounds clearly, they both landed good shots but imo potkonnen landed the more cleaner shots although hamadouche did show some good body work. Also it wasn't just potkonnen who was clinching for me, she was doing it more but she was a lil unlucky to get penalized for it, most people see fights differently though so Im not gonna argue with you're view, I was just highly impressed with the 40 year old for pulling that off mainly

Hamadouche was saying she doesn't respect Potkonen for this victory as it wasn't fair. However this isn't Potkonen's fault so it's a bit childish. Hamadouche fought like a professional but that doesn't work the same in olympic style. This kinda bitter commentary against another athlete isn't cool though. Perhaps she should just change her name from Hamadouche to just Douche.
