Comments Thread For: Jamel Herring Plans To Keep WBO Title, Eyes Stevenson-Nakathila Winner For Mandatory Defense

There remains unfinished business at junior lightweight for Jamel Herring. BoxingScene.com has learned that the reigning World Boxing Organization (WBO) 130-pound titlist intends to keep his title and commit to facing the winner of the June 12 interim title fight between Shakur Stevenson and Namibia's Jeremiah Nakathila (21-1, 17KOs). The latter part was a condition placed by the WBO in permitting Herring (23-2, 11KOs) to move forward with his oft-postponed optional defense versus Carl Frampton earlier this month.

The obligatory duties as champion for Jamel, mirror a similar situation between Valdez vs. Stevenson last year : fitting that Shakur Stevenson rips a WBC-WBO unification from Oscar Valdez with Jamel Herring, considering that Valdez vacated the WBO featherweight title instead of facing his mandatory, Shakur Stevenson. Jamel is in the same position that Valdez found himself with the looming mandatory defense vs. the winner of Stevenson vs. Nakathila, but, Herring is willing to give Stevenson his shot.

Its rare that fans can be happy about a mandatory, this is one of those exceptions. The bonus is that Shakur Stevenson vs. Jeremiah Nakathila is also a proper world-level contest.
