Now you got me thinking that boxers send in those cheesy video resumes to promoters.

Hi I'm (Name) and I'm from X Gym. [camera pan out] I am a top amateur with 100+ fights. [switch to camera B, boxer looks over] I know I can be a world champion that you would be proud to have in your stable. [cut to him jogging] I work hard. [cut to him hitting a heavy bag] I hit hard. [cut to sauna door opening and him exiting with the hiss of steam] and I don't play around at all.

It seems to me as if it's like trades work where if you know somebody who knows somebody you'll have the chance to make the big paydays.

You would only get signed by small time promoters who does little shows. Some of them have connections to bigger promoters though. And most of the small time promoters take little cuts.

Getting signed is not easy at all unless you're a Amateur Stand Out/Olympian and even better at least an Olympic Medalist

you can also get signed from showing up at a Top Gym like Wild Card or Mayweather gym and just working hard and looking good in sparring

If not a Amateur Stand out or anything then you will like start off with very small promoter maybe even somewhere in Mexico fighting for little to no money

Promoters if they think some how they can make money with you or can use you they will sign. But that is in the small minority of boxers and even less with wanna be boxers.
