Jesse Brinkley: Former Contender In Search Of Contention

By Jake Donovan - It seems like a lifetime ago when “The Contender” first launched. Since opening to mixed reviews in March 2005, all matters related to the show have gone through considerable changes in and out of the ring.

On the tube, the boxing-based reality series has bounced from NBC to ESPN2 and now to VERSUS, which just aired the fourth season of the show.

In the ring, Tournament of Contenders – who promotes the fights during the series with the intention of promoting the fighters beyond the season finale – endured a massive overhaul in its stable. Most of the fighters from the first season signed on for long-term deals; few remain from that graduating class, with even fewer having a kind word to say on their way out the door – or in some cases while still under contract.

Among the alumni who have since moved on is Jesse Brinkley, currently enjoying a seven-fight win streak. What the 32-year old is not part of, however, is the group of kicking and screaming defectors who rue the day they ever set foot in reality land.

“I had a great run with The Contender people, but we all move on,” said Brinkley. [details]

    Brinkley vs Pascall

The Brinkley vs Gilbert fight was really entertaining. That was on MASN in February, but they still show that fight all the time. Its always on in bars and restaraunts around here and people who you know don't watch boxing are always into that fight whenever its on. I don't see Brinkley as a threat to anyone on the super middleweight tournament, and Pavlik would destroy him. I'd definetly like to see Brinkley fight again though if his fights are anywhere near as entertaining as the Gilbert fight was....

Mike Pascall is a cat from somewhere around the Baltimore area. A good friend of mine used to train at the same gym he trains at. I thought Pascall looked decent before getting his forhead split open by a shot from Dirrell that left Pascall looking like someone had stabbed him with a hammer. Hopefully he upsets Brinkley. Wish MASN was showing that fight.
