Victor Ortiz-Marcos Maidana: The Pre-Fight Report Card

By Cliff Rold - No titles? No problem. Lost in all the hoopla of ‘super’ this and ‘pay per’ that is the joy of seeing two young fighters whose physical primes are evident to the eye, both at the peak of their professional hunger. It used to be more common in boxing but the nature of a market which crucifies for the simple sin of defeat, the struggle for air time, creates more risk aversion than is often healthy.

The last few years, we’ve seen less of it. There have been more quality fights more frequently but this is still of the rare breed. In terms of Boxing After Dark shows, this might be the riskiest test for a major prospect since Heavyweight David Tua was locking horns with almost every other young Heavyweight worth a look in the mid and late 1990s. Thinking about the upset. Cheering for Maidana. Good luck to both of them!

This could end up being one of the best fights this year. Two young possible stars facing each other? That really is unheard of today. I think I shall stay with my pick of Ortiz. He should understand that Maidana has the power to put anyone out if he lands and Ortiz has the skills to hopefully keep Maidana from landing that shot and winning the fight.

I saw a little bit of Maidana's last fight and he looked like the less technical of the two, but I was watchin a **** quality version of the fight. I can see Ortiz touchin this guy up any way he wants though, but the fact Maidana is just as fresh and probably just as strong as Ortiz is what makes this an awesome fight for Victor. It's gonna be crazy cause I don't think Ortiz has been engaged like this guy will engage him, since fighting Esalas and that's exactly what Ortiz needs. I mean he's been blasting guys non stop lol, he needs someone who's gonna show some kind of resistance. But Dario Esalas was strong if anything, and aside from the flash knock down Ortiz looked sharp when Esalas forced him to fight. He was a little inaccurate, but he handled Esalas' attacks well. And I think that Esalas fight was the first Ortiz fight that I've seen where Victor wasn't stalking most of the time, I mean he had to let his hands rip in that bout a little more than usual, and when he did he had some mean hooks to the head and body. So I just got a feeling that Maidana is gonna bring that out of Victor again, we're gonna see sweat fly off this dudes head.

This should be a very good fight. Maidana will ask questions of Ortiz and it's up to Ortiz to answer them. I'm pretty sure Maidana will test Ortiz' chin, quite possibly early. I disagree with the article saying Maidana's best punch is his right hand, I think his left hook is his best punch, he likes to double and triple up on the hook and sometimes transition it into an uppercut which Ortiz will have to look out for. Left hooks can land on southpaws.

But Maidana gets wild and wide with his shots sometimes and squares himself up while leaving his chin in the air, I think Ortiz will be able to counter Maidana's shots with his own faster, straighter shots down the middle.

I got Ortiz by knockout in about 6 rounds in a very entertaining fight.

Edit: The circumstances of this fight kinda reminds me a little of DLH-Ruelas. Ruelas was considered a big step up for the up and coming DLH even though DLH had already won the lightly regarded at the time WBO belt, a big puncher with more experience and DLH ended up blowing him out in 2 rounds in what is still one of his biggest wins.

Obviously Maidana probably isn't as good as Ruelas was and I don't expect it to be a blowout or anything like that but it just reminds me a little of it.

Both fighters are good, but I see Ortiz dominating this fight, wont be surprised if by KO....

Hey I got the right round. Wrong guy. So close yet so far.

                    Nice prediction Cliff.
