By Terence Dooley - When talk turns to the topic of ‘Best British boxer to never win a world title’ the same old names come up, two of them in fact: Kirkland Laing and Herol Graham.
[details]
He was losing pretty badly to Laing both times but as he said, he came on strong and knocked Laing out, he didn't do too well against Curry though, not many people did too well with Curry at his best so it's not a bad thing. Interesting to read about him.
I remember Jones very well. Especially because of his demolition of EBU titleholder Hans Henrik Palm. That fight was brutal and possibly Jones' peak. He completely destroyed the dane in 2 rounds.
I remember that a couple of days after the fight, Palm was on danish television and the reporter went trough that 2. round virtually blow-by-blow and had Palm commenting. That was a vicious move.
One of the final questions for Palm was something like: "You took some 15 clean unanswered headshots. Do you think it's safe for you to fight on?"
I cannot remember Palm's answer but he did retire after the fight and has had an extremely succesfull businesscareer after his fighting days were over. Palm today owns a fitnesschain and he is a multimillionaire.
Oh and regarding the Palm fight I remember that it was postponed due to Jones suddenly turning ill days before the fight. Infection in his appendix I think. So Palm instead fought and easily beat a very late replacement in Georges Warufsel. It was well-known that Jones was in a totally different class than Warufsel and Jones got his titleshot some 9 months later.
