  • “Fighting Words” – Antonio Tarver: Not With a ****, Not With a Whimper

by David P. Greisman - No one expects Antonio Tarver to do anything quietly.

He has never been a shrinking violet, a wallflower, a supporting character content with his secondary role. Instead, he has been charismatic when cast as the hero, defiant when dubbed the villain, and loquacious whenever the cameras are on, the microphones are near and the topic involves him.

And so it was his quiet that spoke volumes.

There was little of the usual bluster, less of the verbal swagger from Tarver in the months before his rematch with light heavyweight beltholder Chad Dawson. That was not the case when the two first met, when Tarver had a title around his waist and could still claim to be of consequence in their division.

It was Dawson who had given up a title belt of his own to challenge Tarver, Dawson who sought to capture the shine off one of the men who had ruled the division. That recognition had been traded between Tarver, Joe Calzaghe, Bernard Hopkins, Glen Johnson, and Roy Jones Jr., five fighters who took in the large paydays but were either approaching 40 years old or already past it. Antonio Tarver had a great career with many noteworthy accomplishments, but I think he has done whatever he was going to do in this sport and should retire.

tarver can still make some money fighting gatekeepers. his time headlining HBO and Showtime cards might be over though except as an opponent.

I could have told you that. Tarver was done a few years ago.....

Everyone including me wants Dawson to "rematch" Glen. But then what? Glen is over 40 years old. I say he pulls a ***** move like what Joe Calzaghe did to Hop and say he won the first time around. For Joe this was OK but not Dawson?

There is no one left. So yes Chad should fight Johnson because he (Johnson) deserves it. Joe Calzaghe thought he was the best and then retired, Hop's almost 45 and wants a good solid easy pay day before he retires so this is not a fight with Chad.

Dawson is the LAST man to beat at LHW. Joe IMO has unfinished business if he thinks he's "THE BEST". He didnt clearly beat Hopkins let a lone Chad.

So yes he should fight Johnson ONLY because no else is left. Joe ran out to retire faster than you can say "***** move". If anything Dawson deserves a fight with Calzaghe and or Hopkins more than Johnson deserves a rematch......

The whole Chad wont do anything for them is horse ****. He is the last man to beat and he has a solid record at the age of 26. Beating Johnson, Tarver 2 X and defeating the now CW champion who Hopkins now wants to fight is pretty damn solid if you ask me.

Maybe Chad should talk to the Kessler's, Manfreo's and Viet's etc etc etc and see what the hell those guys did to deserve a fight.....

But "at the end of the day" Dawson should give Johnson a rematch..... some time or another..... but then Dawson gets **** because Glen is over 40 and Chad will only get better so when he beats Glen the second time it will become Glen being OLD right?

I dont get it. I think Chad is fooked at LHW!

I thought he lost the 1st fight, so **** age. I give him mass cred if he fights Glen again whether he wins or not. I'm pretty sure he won't do it tho. I wish Bhop would, but as you said he wants to cash out. Beyond those 2 fights, I couldn't care less about 175.

Yea I agree. It sucks because I really liked 175.

I feel for Chad because he's going to end up moving down and get **** for fighting the "smaller" guys because NO ONE wants him at LHW... but then again he started his career in the 160's and fought at SMW not too long ago (2006 I think).

O well you do what you gotta do....

Tarver really never showed me anything. Like Bernard said, he is a one trick pony.
Other than the KO of Jones there is nothing remarkable to say about Tarver.
