Insider Notebook: Mum on Mayweather, Pacquiao Fever

By Robert Morales - Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, said this week that if Floyd Mayweather Jr. were to come out of retirement, he could take over the title as pay-per-view champion that was vacated when Oscar De La Hoya recently retired.
Mayweather, of course, is presumably in negotiations to fight Golden Boy fighter Juan Manuel Marquez. Even if that does not materialize, there doesn't seem to be much doubt Mayweather will fight again. Of course, if he only comes out of retirement for a fight or two, he will never be able to come close to doing what De La Hoya did. We're talking 14.1 million pay-per-view buys that generated $696 million in revenue. [details]

Floyd is just in a tough spot. I think he wants to wait until after May 2nd but if he waits then JMM may fight the winner of the May 2nd fight.

Thought you said he would make his decision before.

I never said that. I said that if he doesnt make his decision before the 2nd then there is virtualy no way that he will fight JMM. If he waits then I think Hatton will pick JMM if he wins and I think Pac will pick either Floyd or JMM if he wins. I think Floyd is having a hard time deciding on what to do. If he signs the JMM fight now then he takes away both Hatton & Pac's other prime option and they will basically have to fight Floyd next but maybe Floyd wants to go straight to Pac. Even if he wants to he still may not get it but he has a good 50/50 or 51/49 shot.

i'd rather be considered pound for pound the best fighter in the world then P4P the m

First of all Mayweather vs Hatton was huge and Pacquiao vs Mayweather would be even bigger , I know people that barely watch boxing telling me they heard that Floyd is comming out of retirement to fight Pacquiao, Floyd will do big numbers maybe it wont top DLH numbers but lets be honest Oscar has a built in mexican fan base, if Floyd was Mexican he would be much bigger then DLH because he knows how to win big fights, the truth is it may be a long time before someone tops Oscar numbers especialy if your American and not Mexican , but the botom line is i'd rather be considered pound for pound the best fighter in the world then P4P the most popular

                    or ever.

oscar had the mexican-american heritage working for him in addition to casual fans support who knew him since the olympics in barcelona.

he had the looks , he had the talk , he had the skill , he had the story (after the story about his mom and promising her the gold medal how can anyone not root for the guy tbh?) and he had the promoter and manager.

it was perfect for the golden boy. maybe it's karma what happened to him in his close fights. imagine if he got the decisions in the mosley and tito fights? that's too much good for one person.......
