Edwin Valero Lives Life at Full Throttle

By T.K. Stewart - Some people live a cautious life with one eye on the speedometer and with one foot on the brake. Others live recklessly, stare danger in the eye and chuckle. They skip over the speed bumps of life and live the only way they know how - wide open and at full throttle.

In case you’re wondering, in the above example, Edwin Valero is the latter.

Tomorrow night in Austin, Texas, Valero will walk up the steps and slink through the ropes of a boxing ring set up inside the Frank Erwin Center. He will fight in front of what promises to be a raucous crowd and before an international pay-per view audience. While this is not a feat of any great consequence, and also something that takes place in boxing on a fairly regular basis, there are some that believe Edwin Valero should not be allowed near a boxing ring at all.

In February of 2001, on a sunny and warm Venezuelan day, 19 year-old Edwin Valero was on the back of what was a stallion of a motorcycle and he was not wearing a helmet. His best guess is that he was traveling at 50 miles per hour, maybe more, when he smashed into a car, was thrown from the bike and landed on his head. [details]

Why give so much prominence to what a retired neurologist who has never seen the fighter or any of his MRIs has to say? There are several leading neurologists who have seen the fighter and his MRIs, and they say that he runs no more risk than any other boxer - why not interview any of them?

fat chance "valero is heavily favored to win." i suggest u all watch valero's fyt with vicente "loco" mosquera in youtube. valero was pushed to the limit by vicente 'loco' mosquera (Aug.2006), although loco got tko'd in last minute of rd 10. mosquera is flat footed and don't have pop in his punches, but valero got hurt and was running in many rounds. Valero was even floored in rd 3. valero has no defense, not then and not today. he only extends his right to lean on his opponent's forehead.

with that fyt in mind, i tend to believe that the \"edwin valero myth\" will be shattered this time..........pitalua used to fyt in JrWW (140lbs) before he faced santa cruz in 135. and look at his record of KO percentage. valero will taste the same power punches in his face. i hope Pitalua did not have weight reduction problem during camp. i'd go for Antonio Pitalua by KO/TKO...tomorrow is "D Day"....

I agree that the betting is a bit overboard. Pitalua is a very good fighter with a lot of power. The possibility for an upset is quite high.

However, you belittling Mosquera as a fighter with no pop and basically not very good is plain wrong. He was a very good fighter in fact.

His win over Nanthanchai was great as was his win over Jose Estrella. He was a solid fighter and it was a good win for Valero.

Nonetheless, I still agree that it's going to be a very hard for him tomorrow. Could go either way.
