Mosley's promoter calls for further probe of Margarito, trainer

This article was originally on a blog post platform and may be missing photos, graphics or links.

A day after The Times obtained the California Department of Justice lab report that showed calcium and sulfur -- two key elements of plaster -- were found adhered to a gauze pad inserted into the hand wrappings of boxer Antonio Margarito before his January welterweight title defense against Shane Mosley, Mosley's promoter, Richard Schaefer, has called for further investigation into the matter.

"It was obviously not an accident, they added something to the gauze, and I think this is potentially a criminal act," Schaefer said. "There's no excuse for this whatsoever. This should be dealt with the strongest possible legal consequence."

Karen Chappelle unsuccessfully attempted to introduce into evidence a photo of Margarito's handwraps following his 2008 upset of unbeaten Miguel Cotto that bore resemblance to the tainted gauze pads.

I wasnt even aware that happened..How was she able to put that together so fast?

Jesus, what a bunch of ****ing scumbags. Cheating during the Cotto fight is still up in the air and can be argued either way, cheating during the Cintron fight is likely but all but impossible to prove at this point. But these MF'ers were caught with the smoking gun this time around. Murphy's Law won favor though: They got caught AND their boy got the **** beat out of him. I hope they bury these c*cksuckers.

                From the story:
                [I]
Supervising deputy attorney general Karen Chappelle said it would be up to the state athletic commission to recommend an additional investigation or sanction beyond the current license revocation. She said Margarito and Capetillo face a stiff challenge in regaining their licenses.

"No one in our office can remember anyone violating our rules in this way," Chappelle said. "It's pretty egregious."[
                /I]

Translation: They're not giving Margarito his license back.

Golden Boy applying pressure could be seen as Oscar getting back at Margarito for all the **** he talked in the past. But I'd like to believe that they're doing it because they have no choice. Not just to look good for the public at large, but doing it for the good of the sport. Fighters need to be protected from this kind of dangerous element. There's zero room for plaster inside a boxing ring.

I'm no lawyer (far from it), but if it's true that it's up to the commission to recommend an additional investigation, then considering the corruption and incompetence in boxing, they may not want to open up a can of worms by having more investigations. I wouldn't be surprised if one scandal leads to another.

But can Golden Boy file criminal charges on their own?
