Juan Manuel Marquez-Juan Diaz: Pre-Fight Report Card

By Cliff Rold - Every once in a while, a fight comes along with so many possibilities, it makes picking a winner hard to determine. It doesn’t mean fans and pundits don’t do it anyways. With chewed fingernails, they push the button for one side or the other and then hope the fight was worth the wonder. [details]

I disagree with the speed comparison. JMM has much faster hands. Look at those blazing exchanges with Pac. Diaz is gonna get schooled.

Lets say Diaz beats Marquez this weekend, are people still going to praise Marquez so highly? I mean seriously Marquez's only recognition is his close fights with Pacquiao, close but no wins. Morales beat Pacquaio by UD so then we should be considering Morales a Top 5.

Marquez is going to have to fight Diaz, simply because there is no other option. Diaz comes and he keeps coming. He's a strong guy, though there is some softness in him as seen in the Campbell fight.

I don't think Marquez can just pot shot and counter, he needs to really dig down and fight this guy for the whole 12 rounds. It's hard to pick a winner as Mr. Rold says, but this might just be a fight that Diaz can win.

Marquez is an all time great hall of famer. His recognition comes from the fact that he is an excellent fighter. Give me Marquez over Morales in their prime any day based on class. As for the Pacquiao fights, Marquez won them both. End of story.

Hall of Famer for close fights with Pac, beating an old Barrera and an old Casamayor. Other then that what other big names are on his resume?

Too bad boxrec.com list Marquez with the "L" against Pac.

Diaz doesn't have the power or skill to handle Marquez. Marquez will box him silly and stop him late.

Mike McCallum couldn't get the really big fights and is still rated by most as an ATG. The lack of big names on Marquez's résumé is mostly not his fault (other than turning down the Pacquiao rematch years ago, which was admittedly a big mistake).

Styles makes fights, and even if he can't beat a fighter with Diaz's workrate any more, he could still outclass most top fighters - a bit analagous to Hopkins not being able to beat high workrate fighters any more but outclassing Pavlik.
