The World’s Best Featherweight Meets the World

By Cliff Rold - 43 Fights, 42 wins, 22 Knockouts, no losses.

    It’s a good start.

For 29-year old Featherweight Chris John, it’s been more that a start. It’s the ledger of the man whose been generally regarded as the best fighter at 126 lbs. for the last two or three years. So why will it feel for many fans like John, who will attempt his tenth defense of the WBA title this Saturday against American veteran Rocky Juarez (28-4, 20 KO), is new.

Because, for the bulk of the viewing audience witnessing the chief support bout to Saturday’s blockbuster World Lightweight title showdown between Juan Manuel Marquez and Juan Diaz, he is.

Of his 43 bouts, John has fought only four outside his native Indonesia. It is ironic that his American debut happens on the undercard of Marquez-Diaz. Most American fans who know of John attach him to Marquez. He was, or wasn’t depending on the sides of the debate, the beneficiary of a hometown decision in 2006 against Marquez in Indonesia. It was the culmination of some questionable business decisions for Team Marquez before a career defining run. [details]

Good Stuff. The Chris John fight isn't getting enought pub and he has been a distinguished champion and a win over a tough silver medalist in his home state will validate John's career and deflect those claims that his record is a result of homecooking.

CJ is gonna rule. He is not a crowd-pleasing fighter, but he has what it takes to convince hardcore fans. I assume his US debut will be a Calzaghe-esque one.

Good article but it's very worrying that John's been ill and may not be able to make weight.

Also I'm not so sure that GBP can be painted in such a good light. They froze out Campbell and it looks as if they may freeze out Funeka.

Seen a bit of John and I'm impressed with his boxing skills. I'm a Juarez fan and hope that he does better than his last fight. If Juarez doesn't keep busy then John is going to pick up an easy UD.

many has been said about john and many raise their eyebrows when he inked that decision over the highly respected marquez. on fight nght, john's real worth will be showcased equally talented but always come short of winning a belt in juarez, and against critical a u.s. audience.

why is marquez not bent on seeking revenge against john? is he afraid of another loss or he believe that he won his bout with the indonesian?

because he didn't have to. The fighters who were considered to be the best in his divisions all fought in America.

I guess Ottke was the best too.
