  • Team Margarito Discuss Mosley, Paul Williams Rematch

By Rick Reeno - A lot has been written about the shambled negotiations for a welterweight encounter between WBA champion Antonio Margarito and challenger “Sugar” Shane Mosley. The two sides, Top Rank and Golden Boy Promotions, were in talks for the last few weeks, working hard to reach a deal for a Margarito-Mosley headliner on January 24 in Las Vegas, with HBO televising.

The deal-breaker was not the $4 million dollars license fee being offered by HBO. The deal-breaker was Mosley’s position of not backing away from a 50-50 split of money. According to Margarito’s co-manager, Sergio Diaz, Top Rank was on their side with respect to Margarito receiving a bigger portion of the purse. Diaz tells BoxingScene.com that a fight with Mosley can still be made, for the January date - if Mosley backs away from his position of receiving a 50% split.

“Mosley said that Tony pissed his pants and that’s true, but it was not out of fear. He pissed his pants from laughter after he was told what the split would be. This time Top Rank and Team Margarito are on the same page. It’s time Antonio started getting what is due to him. When you have a guy like Mosley that was beaten by the guy who we knocked out in July, telling us that we have to take 50% of the purse, it turned everyone off, including the fighter,” Diaz said. “Antonio is not afraid of Mosley. There is still time to make the fight. There is time, but not a lot of it and we are not going to make it for 50-50.” [details]

Margarito and his team is a BIG F****** joke. They so much as admitted that he has a good chance to lose to Mosley and dont want to mess up a big payday with Cotto. Why not fight Williams when everybody knows he was offered 4 million? Diaz can say it was just offered on the internet so why didnt they say on the internet they wanted the fight? He will NOT make 4 million fighting Cotto; Arum wont let him make that much money!!

I'm going to look foward to Goosen's response. Hopefully in the next day or so.

I also like how Diaz pretty much said straight out that they weren't willing to take the risk to fight Mosley because they felt an upset could happen. If that's not ducking I don't know what is.

what the hell is Margarito smoking? Margarito a big draw?? what where his PPV number before Cotto.. almost nothing. Mosley has pulled more PPV numbers then Margo has.
Then they say they are not afraid of the risk Mosley presents but then they say they are because of what happened to Hopkins.. ugh ok? So are you afraid of the risk or not?

They aren't willing to take the risk for 50/50 split. Margarito does deserve a bigger split. You also forgot to mention that even if they were to fight Mosley, haters would be saying he fought an old Mosley.

Every fight is a risk. There is a reason why HBO and Showtime don't allow fighters with upcoming dates to take any interim fights. I'm sure they will take the fight for 60-40, I think. Not 50-50 though.
