British Olympian Frankie Gavin, the first British fighter to win a world amateur title, is also the first British Olympian to go pro, signing a reported three-year deal with promoter Frank Warren. Gavin plans to campaign at junior welterweight and will have his interests represented by attorney Gareth Williams, who already represents both Ricky Hatton and Joe Calzaghe. Gavin was forced out of the Olympic Games in Beijing after he failed to make the weight, for lightweight. [details]

look for him to rack up a record of 35-0 or something to that effect fighting no bodies win a paper title, defend it like 10 times, then go to the U.S and get exposedComment

The only reason that might happen is because he'll fight tomato cans under Frank Warren. If his career is managed right, with clear progress at the right time, there's no reason this kid couldn't go all the way. If you fight people miles below your skill level for 30 odd fights then you pick up bad habits, and that's what happens to a lot of Warren's fighters.Comment

yeah hes got talent no doubt, but id rather see promising young guys like him being continually tested (not put through the meat grinder, but tested) from day one, work hard for a title shot against a top class opponent etc....pick up a few inevitable losses (the ones that come from fightign lots of class opponents back to back) on the way and have a record of something like 25-3-1 in 7 or 8 years, having fought some elite guys .....than be 38-0 as a 30 year old and about to finally step up when really they could have done it 4-5 years back ..........The only reason that might happen is because he'll fight tomato cans under Frank Warren. i wish it was that a fighter could have some tough tests from day one and even lose a few fights, but still go on without their stock or reputation damaged too much, and eventually win a title
these days a loss is the end of the world and promising young guys are fed tomato cans, then bums, then average guys, then semi world class guys, and finally world class fighters....and thats their first real test.....they havent had any tough fights before they reach world level, and for a lot of them thats their downfall
thats why im a big fan of mexican and south american boxing, those guys start young, get a few losses, but improve lots along the way and eventually the good ones become elite, and when they reach that level they have the experience of previous tough fights to guide themLast edited by KostyaTszyu44; 11-01-2008, 07:43 AM.Comment
