A List of Boxing’s Tricks - and Treats

By Dave Sholler - Tomorrow night, the future Mrs. Sholler will be laughing as I scream like a girl. You see, in just 24 hours, she and I will be riding a haunted hayride in Lancaster, PA. To be blunt, I am no fan of these ghoulish adventures. Something about being grabbed by masked strangers and not being able to slug them bothers me. So instead of swinging blindly at some fool yielding a chainsaw, I’ll holler like a grade schooler. She will laugh. I will cry. I’m not proud of it, but it’s the truth.

Speaking of the truth, we’ve seen plenty of it exposed in boxing over the past few months. In one instance, we saw a 39-year-old trick us all into believing that he could still compete at the highest level. In another case, we learned that a boxer was telling the truth when he said that he was still a force at age 43.

In honor of the Halloween season, BoxingScene.com takes a look at the sport’s most recent tricks and treats. As you take a journey through the sport on your own boxing hayride, contemplate which tricks were the most deceptive and which treats were the most rewarding. [details]

larry merchant? surely you're joking, i've never heard anyone so incompetant in my life. He stumbles over his lines (which he says unbeleivably slowly) and half the time he makes very little sense. Seriously, U.S boxing fans should listen to a Uk broadcast of big fights, the difference in quality of commentary is massive

I have heard them before and they are pretty good, but I don't think many of them compare to Jim Lampley or Manny Steward

In post Hop/Pav, Merchant quoted Emerson convincingly in boxing context. He's genuine and generally spot on. I hope he doesn't kick the bucket anytime soon.

An unusual beginning but a very good article...........

I like this writer, and I like this article. My only difference is that I believe that Calzaghe clearly beat Hopkins, who was busy trying to eke out the minutes, as well as giving Emmy Award performances fir the Worst Actor.

It wasn't pretty, but that was, and IS, Hopkins' FORTE. When have you
LAST seen Hopkins in a good, entertaining fight.....??? EVER.....??? Maybe in his first few years against nonen******. But since he became "Bernard Hopkins" and gradually pushed into the limelight by MAX KELLERMAN, who was the ONLY TV guy whe ever even mentioned him, he has STUNK OUT every fight he's been involved in.

And YES. I agree tha tMax could learn a bit from Larry Merchant, who, although he's getting older, and slower, still can zoom in on the pith of a discussion, and render a clever, thoughtful judgement .

Those who disagree better realise that, one day, they'll be old and slow llke Larry, and they should pray that they'll be as acute in their reasoning.

I've heard many British commentators, and they are, yes, very sharp, and good. But the main thing they seem to want to do, is to squeeze as many words into a specified, limited time as possible....Still, they are good. Different to Merchant and others over here, but....good.

                About Max...........

About Max, I forgot to also include that he should try to find a way to talk less passionately about fighters, many of whom,I'm SURE, he cares NOTHING about, but still he allows his eyeballs to almost pop out of their sockets. This is something he should work on, and it would improve his standard immesureably.

He seems to want to transfer his early stints to HBO intact. This won't work he should be a little more sedate, less EMPHATIC, and allow his eyeballs to RELAX............

UK commentary is funny. It's like they're commentating on a football match or something, I like how excited they get and start shouting.
