  • Trainer Oscar Suarez Passes, Boxing World Mourns

BoxingScene.com has the unfortunate task of reporting the passing of trainer Oscar Suarez, who died late Saturday night. Suarez's age isn't immediately known but the cause of death is being attributed to complications from pancreatic cancer. Sources close to Suarez estimate his age to be in the early 50s and say he had only recently discovered his infirmity. Suarez is survived by his wife Marie and several children.

Wow, that was surprising. I thought he was only in his 40's. Pancreatic cancer takes you out fast. That's what killed the NFL's Gene Upshaw a couple of weeks ago.

man Thats sad I never even knew he was sick! I used to see Oscar Suarez all the time on TV but wondered what happen to him.

He was a very popular trainer back in the day.

I was as shocked as everyone else to hear of this. I only had one encounter with Oscar, this at a boxing card last year. We were both staying in the same hotel and his fighter Patrick Lopez was about to fight Fernando Angulo later that day. Suarez was a very pleasant man who spoke fondly of all of his fighters, even the ones who had split less than amicably with him. I found him to be very knowledgeable of the sport but not condescending, like a history book of a sport I had seen primarily through a TV lens. He will be sorely missed.
