It's not all that big of a difference, it took Hopkins 7 years to fight his first unification fight, Calzaghe 9.

Am I right in believing that political problems betwen the sanctioning bodies tended to prevent unification bouts in this time? This is what I have heard.

Yeah, sanctioning bodies normally don't like unification fights.

please remind people that joe also had the wbo.

back then a unification bout with the wbo is downright impossible. the wbc , wba and ibf did not want the wbo to become a major player with them.

that's why joe ended up fighting the wbc , ibf , wba champs only AFTER they were no longer the champion.

especially more so with the wbo back then.

              remember naseem?

naseem beat every single beltholder in the division.

they would strip naseem or even one time stripped his opponent of his belt right before the fight with hamed.

Unification fights were unlikely for Hopkins and Calzaghe because it would've meant both themselves and their opponent taking a pay cut in order to face the toughest possible opponent. And then you have to take into account the sanctioing bodies politics etc.

Don King's middleweight tournament and Calzaghe-Lacy generated more money, so that's why they happened.

yup. that's why you have these idiots who never saw hamed fight talk about naseem was never anything and he was a nobody.

if there was no ABC org politics naseem would've held all the belts and all these boxrec warriors would be like , "he was the greatest man. look how he unified the division."

In Calzaghe and Hopkins' case I understand the problem with unifying the belts. In Naseem's case, he's lucky to hold any belt while shamelessly ducking his mandatory.
